About the Artist

The Crüxshadows started in the early 1990's in a little town in North Florida. The band's dark electronic rock and introspective lyrics quickly earned them a fan base in the new wave, gothic and industrial genres. With a constant and ambitious release schedule and a dizzying live performance itinerary, they have often eschewed music industry wisdom to try new ideas, much to their success. They have played many hundreds of shows worldwide including concerts in Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Czech Republic, The Netherlands, The United States, and beyond. The Crüxshadows were one of the first Western acts to play in Romania & Serbia following the cold war. In 2007 they became one of the first alternative bands to perform at an open-air festival in Beijing, China. Their festival shows have drawn as many as 18,000 people to the front of the stage during their performance. In 2005, The Crüxshadows headlined the 4-day Bochem Total festival in Germany, which had a total attendance of just under one million people. A blend of synthpop, goth and electronica, the band's unique and often catchy songs have become staples of the underground club scene. With the rich and romantic flavor of the electric violin, mixed with crunchy and sometimes biting guitar lines, songs by The Crüxshadows are immediately recognizable. Lyrically, they draw heavily from ancient mythology, and tend to focus on themes of responsibility, loyalty, passion and faith. The band's motto is "Live, love, be, believe," and it serves as a reminder that while The Crüxshadows may write catchy songs, the band has depth that extends beyond the dance floor. That depth has earned the band many fans among the literary crowd, including Caitlin Kiernan, John Ringo, and New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman. The Crüxshadows wrote a song based on Gaiman's movie, Mirror Mask, which Gaiman included on his CD, "Where's Neil When You Need Him?" Several of the band's albums and singles have reached the Top 10 on the German Alternative Chart (DAC). Sophia, the first single from their most recent album, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Dance Singles Sales chart and stayed on the chart for eighteen weeks. Birthday, the second single, debuted at #1 a year later and Sophia re-entered the chart at #3 that same week. Songs by The Cruxshadows have appeared on ABC World News, National Geographic Television, The Style Channel, MTV and many other shows in Europe and Asia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real good EP, January 14, 2008
This review is from: Birthday (Audio CD)
I am a big fan of the Cruxshadows. So when this CD came out I had to get it. I love the song Birthday and I like the remixes. It is such an uplifting song for me. But the highlight was the redone version of "White Rabbit." Rogue's voice is so haunting in that song, its awesome. I've never heard the Jefferson Airplanes' version though. I just wish that song was longer.
Anyway, it was a good EP, and I'm glad i got it. for those who have never listened to the CXS before I wouldn't recommend it. I'd suggest getting one of their full length albums, like Wishfire or DreamCypher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD Single!, October 31, 2007
This review is from: Birthday (Audio CD)
While "Birthday" is not my favorite track off of Dreamcypher, it is a very good song. The lyrics about making choices with your life before it is too late are relevant to everyone. Plus, the Cruxshadows continue to do what many artists have stopped doing - putting bonus tracks on their single release CDs. "The Eighth Square" is a great dance track with unusual lyrics. And, it is nice to finally have the concert only track, "White Rabbit," available.

Another bonus to the single releases are "edit" versions. Sometimes Cruxshadows' songs are a little too long (topping 7 minutes or more), especially if you're making your own mix CD. So, their EPs and singles offer shortened versions of great songs. The remixes for "Birthday" are also well done. If you're a fan of CXS, buy this now. But casual listeners will also find this a worthwhile choice. Highly recommended.
