This is a charming tale of two sisters, Madison and Aubrey, as different as Snow White and Rose Red. The story, set in the desert Southwest, has a fairy tale quality with talking animals and colorful scenery. Madison, age 6, is facing surgery and a long hospital stay for a serious condition. She must be away from her beloved Eagle Wings Ranch for her birthday. Madi is never whiny about her health which has restricted her from many normal childhood activities. But she accepts her condition with fortitude and grace. The strong Christian faith of the sisters and love for each other lights up every page. The girls share a bond with the farm animals; each animal has its own human personality. Lefty, the Turtle is an unlikely leader. Merlin, the Husky is a patient problem-solver. They unite the other animals who contribute their unique skills to bring Madi an amazing birthday present. This is a book to read out loud with the family. The words fly gracefully over the tongue, paint pictures and raise questions to stop and ponder. The author includes many details about the desert habitat that could launch discussions on nature and biology. But the message of the book is about love and gift giving. This is an inspirational read for children of all ages, especially for those children facing hospital stays or other health issues.

This story has a unique style and imagination with a real person represented by the story's main character, Madison. Representing a real person with a story character gives the story a special, inspiring spirit at its surprise conclusion. The ranch animals are not only given human characteristics, but they are bonded personally with the people who live at Eagle Wings and interact so closely with them that I began to see the animals and humans meld. The best part of the story is the spiritual truth that is sung at the birthday party, a truth that will reassure children and adults alike. Give you and your child this gift of a story!

My kids LOVE this book! Madison and Aubrey are adorable, but my children are taken with the animals at Eagle Wings Ranch. The personalities of the animal characters are so different and fun. Also, when Lefty remembers how the mean tortoise tried to bully him when he was little was well "played." Sunny, the little terrier and Merlin, the big Huskey came to Lefty's rescue without lifting a paw. Kids need to have ideas of how to deal with bullys without resorting to violence. And the ending is beautiful and dramatic. My kids keep reading the ending over and over.

This is a sweet story that has lots of elements that little girls will love to hear, and older girls will like reading themselves. The story contains animals with cute personalities, closely bonded sisters, a quest, a birthday surprise, and a loving family with a huge challenge to face. The book is based on real people and animals and the proceeds are being donated to the main character, Maddie. The book would be particularly good read out loud, and there is even a song to sing at the end! We look forward to seeing more from this author.
