5.0 out of 5 stars What a birthday surprise!, September 13, 1998

(REAL NAME)
As usual Ursula Curtiss does her magic charm. I was immediately enthralled by the events of the story she created. How simple it all seemed. All she had to do was deliver a birthday gift to her partner's sister. What harm could there be in that! Unfortunately, what she is led into is murder and mysterious neighbors who are not what they seem. Mrs. Curtiss really knows how to create a mystery that hooks me immediately. Lydia Peel innocently enters into a web of intrigue that endangers her life and confuses her idea of love. It is well worth your time to read. Mrs. Curtiss has done it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Birthday Gift, October 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is one of the last few Ursula Curtiss novels that I have read. I think there may be one more. In any case, it is not at the top of the pile as far as clever mysteries go, but it IS as far as well-described people go. The person who dies is an admirable woman, unfortunately, but her daughter and grandson, neither of whom are, are both amusing and intriguing. The hero is also interesting, not merely a cardboard cut-out of masculinity-to-the-rescue, and the protagonist is a believable and relatable young woman.

The death is a dreadful one, at least to my imagination, and so should be considered before recommending it to any delicate types. But I love Ursula Curtiss, and would recommend any of her novels with gusto to anyone but my mother.
