These books are planned for the very youngest readers, those who have been learning to read for about six to eight weeks and who have a small preprimer reading vocabulary.

My son is learning to read and this book and a lot of Ms. Hillert's books are great for him. He loves to read and the Birthday Car is a great book. Our school carries a lot of her titles.

The Birthday Car,

I am so thrilled that my son who is learning to read was entertained by this book enough to pick it up and "practice" by himself. The text focuses on basic words that he could identify (includes numbers and colors) and also on words he could "sound out". He took great pride in reading it to his little sister too.

3.5 Stars - a Cute Preprimer, not my favorite,
This review is from: THE BIRTHDAY CAR, SOFTCOVER, BEGINNING TO READ (BEGINNING-TO-READ BOOKS) (Paperback)
Well, you can probably guess from the cover what this little boy got for his birthday. Yes, he got a little red car.
The story is one of the simplest I've seen in Ms. Hillert's collection. It basically involves boys in cars and wagons 'going' around town -- going up... going down.... The text talks about colors as well as going up-and-down. It ends with an all boy party at the child's house. Personally, I'm not particular enthused with this particular book and it almost didn't make it onto our site because we generally only review solid 4 and 5 star books, but we've talked it over and we are going to include it as part of our overall "We Love Margaret Hillert Theme". Besides, its quite clear from the other reviews here, that the lovely red pedal car has caught the eyes of certain new readers and we feel happy to include any book that incites children to read!
