5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and confidence-building early reader, April 27, 2010
This review is from: Biscuit's Big Friend (My First I Can Read) (Paperback)
My 5-year-old daughter loves the Biscuit series of books and though we got the series last year, she still takes them off the shelf and reads them by herself and even to me, without being asked! Now, that's a winning series to me as through these two years since I began to teach her reading skills, we've gone through many different readers by various publishers (many of which I've reviewed in terms of how helpful/effective they've been) and only certain series have appealed to her. Being a visual learner, colorful and interesting illustrations are important, but at the same time they should not detract from the reading itself.

The Biscuit series of books has Biscuit the Dog go on simple yet fun adventures. The story here explores Biscuit's friendship with a bigger dog, Sam. The vocabulary is simple with familiar sight words that will motivate a young child who is just beginning to read. It helps to build confidence in reading whilst engaging a young reader's interest through the colorful illustrations and charming story. This is a wonderful and appealing series for early readers.

We love Biscuit at our house. My 6-year-old daughter loves to read Biscuit books because the stories are fun and Biscuit is adorable! My 7-year-old son will say this is a "little kid" book, but secretly peeks over his sister's shoulder as she reads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good easy reader, November 28, 2009
This is a nice book for a beginning reader. The story and illustrations are simple. The author, Alyssa Satin Capucilli, obviously put some thought into choosing the words for a beginning reader. There are combinations of easy sounding words like "Sam can carry a big stick" which a reader can pick out the "a" in 'Sam can' and then sound out 'big' and 'stick' while working on the word 'carry.'
The book presents some minor challenges to keep a new reader interested as well as easy challenges to keep the reader's confidence up!

The first book my Granddaughter read to me was a Biscuit book from school. She was so excited that I bought some more for her and for her brother next year.

I am afraid I find these books boring, but they are easy enough to excite a first timer, and that is the whole purpose. I would describe the Biscuit books as reading level .50.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, March 24, 2006
This review is from: Biscuit's Big Friend (My First I Can Read) (Paperback)
My daughter is in first grade and is a beginner reader and she loves Bisquit books. They are on her level and the pictures of Bisquit are so adorable, she loves to read about his adventures and Bisquit is trying to be a big dog when he is a little puppy and she relates to this because she wants to be like her big brother. I would recommend this book for ages 4 to 7.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great book. Woof! Woof!, July 22, 2003

Biscuit's friend Sam is back. We met sam back in Happy Chanukah, Biscuit, but did not learn much about him. But now Sam, one of his kid owners (the girl with curly hair), and The-Girl-In-Purple-Sneakers are all playing together.

Sam is a very big dog, so big that Biscuit could take a bath in his water dish. Biscuit wants to be big like Sam but learns, in the end, that being small has its own virtues.

Another fun Biscuit book. In this one Biscuit learns that being oneself if the thing to do and that you need not be like someone else.
