Book Description

Pocket Essential series May 1, 2002
Pocket Essentials is a dynamic series of books that are concise, lively, and easy to read. Packed with facts as well as expert opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, history, and more. At the end of the 20th century, popular role models were profiting from the term bisexual, such as Madonna, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Anne Heche. But what is bisexuality? This book highlights civilizations where bisexuality flourished—Queen Nzinga of Africa dressed as a warrior in battle, and the Ancient Greeks practised bisexuality—and where it did not—the Conquistadors turned their dogs on the bisexual Incas. There are biographies, showcasing the lives and loves of famous bisexuals like Alexander the Great, Sappho, Casanova, Marquis de Sade, Oscar Wilde, and Virginia Woolf. There is also an examination of bisexuality in film, including the bisexual escapades of actors and writers.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'To their way of thinking, what made it possible to desire a man or a woman was simply the appetite that nature had implanted in man's heart for 'beautiful' human beings whatever their sex might be.' Foucault, The Use Of Pleasure

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money., September 28, 2006

This review is from: Bisexuality (Pocket Essential series) (Paperback)
What a terrible, terrible book. This first part is supposedly a discussion of bisexuality; it consists of little more than bizarre non sequitors, wanders all over the place and keeps returning to eunuchs and transvestites. Very little discussion of what bisexuality IS. The bulk of the book consists of short, 1-page biographies of famous people who may or may not have been bisexual -- there is little to no evidence or even rumor presented in many of the entries. Don't waste your time or money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid, June 21, 2011
This review is from: Bisexuality (Pocket Essential series) (Paperback)
I totally agree with the other review. Almost no info on what bisexuality is, hearsay and more gender politics than sexuality.
