Book Description

June 1966
The Bishop Method of Clothing Construction is full of really useful sewing information, especially for a beginner. The book is broken down into 15 chapters, including a basic "how to" on sewing and the use of equipment and machines; everything you could want to know about cutting, patterns, measurement & tailoring; and adding details. Just a few include grain perfection, perfection in stitching, and perfection in pressing. All of the projects are accompanied by pictures, diagrams, and references to other chapters. Also included is a thorough glossary of the terms used in the book and basic sewing terms. The latter chapters are very detailed in making items work for your body type and working with any and all patterns.

If you have but one book for clothing construction, this should be it. She doesn't mince words or cut corners. The pictures and instructions are fabulous. It's an incredibly well-written book and well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is the only book you will need. December 17, 2009
Format:Paperback
I was given this book by my sewing teaching when I was wee lass. She told me that it was the only book I would ever need about clothing construction. It is true. Plain and simple. The good thing about the book being out of print is that there were so many published originally that there are quite a few copies available for resale. If sewing is your thing, buy one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Clarity and Detail June 26, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am thrilled to get this book. I remember some things from the one really good sewing class I had, back in 7th grade (1970's!) and I could not find a single sewing/tailoring class locally to bring my skills up to the standard I want for my clothing. Enter a list where someone was talking about this book-- and clearly this was the method taught by my old teacher!!!! Whooooo-hoooo! It is skills based and practical and covers really essential things that I KNEW had to be out there in order for skirts and jackets and blouses to fit properly and hang properly. It is all there in this book. The old black and white photos are clear enough and while the text was to be used in conjunction with an actual skilled teacher of the method, I've enough from my past learning to use the book myself.

I highly recommend this method. It is old fashioned but if you desire to move from loose fitting easy sew garments to actually tailored clothing-- this is a fabulous book!
