Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nic Bishop Spiders (Sibert Honor Book) (Hardcover)
My son is 5 and very curious about insects (and most things in general)... the descriptions are interesting and photos fantastic. While there's a lot of depth there, you can skip some of it, and cover what you choose. I definitely recommend it for any child that's intellectually curious and not squeamish about bugs!

An award winning nature book!,

"It is easy to think that photography is fast. After all, you press the shutter button and the photograph is completed in 1/100th of a second. But it is all the planning and preparation beforehand that takes the time." --Nic Bishop
Imagine snapping a picture of a jumping spider, leaping from one rock to the next. Obviously this is something that happens very fast, so it takes a lot of work to get the picture just right. You have to visit Nic Bishop's website to find out the unusual techniques he uses to capture events like this for his award-winning nature books. But it's because of his unusual techniques that his nature books stand out. Look closely at the pictures in a Nic Bishop book, and you'll find that the details are mesmerizing. In Nic Bishop: Spiders, you can literally count the hairs on a tarantula, see the invisible spider webs one usually walks through, and read all about the gruesomeness that seems to follow spiders wherever they go. Spider lovers will enjoy learning how spiders spin webs, turn their prey's insides into soup, and how a spider uses its pedipalps, or two short arms to hold its prey. Meanwhile, spider haters will have their arm hairs standing on end! Bishop studied and photographed more than a dozen types of spiders for this book from the largest known as the Goliath birdeater tarantula from South America to ones that he raised in his home. He captures rare occurrences like molting, courting, and egg-laying.

Bugged out!,

Beautifully photographed! Nic Bishop captures the spider images so clearly that you would think that they could jump right off of the pages. A very informative and easy read for elementary age students learning about spiders. I never realized how many different types of spiders there are. The index and glossary in the back of the book are an added, helpful bonus.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes spiders.

Spiders: Beautifully Frightening,
By Shannon Finley (SAN ANTONIO, TX, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nic Bishop Spiders (Sibert Honor Book) (Hardcover)
Before I read this book, I knew I was not very fond of spiders or other insects for that matter. I did not realize, however, how much I truly despised spiders until I flipped through the pages. Kudos to Nic Bishop and his fabulous photography used in this book! It is possibly his innovative photography of the spiders that sparked my unknown hatred of these creatures. Each page features a vibrant, graphic picture of a different spider with both facts of spiders in general and facts of the specific spider depicted on the page. What is even worse is the beauty of the spiders Bishop captured. He makes them look so beautiful in his photographs; it is this, perhaps, what made them look even more frightening to me. It is no wonder Nic Bishop won the Robert F. Sibert Honor Book award.
My only true complaint of this book is that it is too good. If you're crazy about spiders, you'll love this book. If you're not, please take my advice and don't eat before reading it.

Creepy Crawly!,
This review is from: Nic Bishop Spiders (Sibert Honor Book) (Hardcover)
Although some of the pictures made me want to barf, this book had the most incredible photography I have ever seen in children's literature! You can see every tiny detail on every disgusting part of every spider photographed! I found myself wanting to turn the page quickly while simultaneously wanting to stare at it longer. I hated spiders when I first read this book but after I was finished I found them very fascinating and quite intriguing! This book is extremely informative and I highly recommend it for any teacher that is doing a lesson plan on spiders. It would be great for children that have a fear of spiders to help them realize that they can actually be pretty cool! And of course, this book is a match made in heaven for spider or even insect lovers! One thing I especially liked about this book was how it put all of the information into kid friendly terms, for example, saying that spiders were much older than Tyrannosaurus Rex rather than saying, "spiders are so so many years old."

Children's Literature,
This review is from: Nic Bishop Spiders (Sibert Honor Book) (Hardcover)
Spiders by Nic Bishop is an absolutely amazing picture book. It's extremely informative, and has incredible pictures. The pictures are exceptionally high-quality that it's almost as though the spider is right there in from of you; like if you reach your hand out you can touch it. I myself am not a very big fan of spiders however I felt this book gave me some pretty good insight. It explains everything from what size they are, to the different organs and body parts they have, to their different hunting strategies as predators, to the color of their blood. It's a very easy read for young ones; it even has a small glossary in the back of the book to help out with a few words they may have trouble with. Bishop did an excellent job of making the book entertaining, and appear interesting while also informing and teaching readers. Overall it is a good book, and I was happy to learn new information.

Spiders, Spiders Everywhere,
This review is from: Nic Bishop Spiders (Sibert Honor Book) (Hardcover)
This book is very informative. It talked about spiders I had no idea even existed. I only knew of a few different types of spiders, but I realized that there are many different species. I also realized that not all spiders are creepy. This book taught me a lot about spiders and I would like to use this in my classroom for a science lesson. It is important for kids to know how important spiders are for the ecosystem and keeping everything in order. This is a good and fun way for them to realize that.

This review is from: Nic Bishop Spiders (Sibert Honor Book) (Hardcover)
The book "Spiders" by Nic Bishop is a informative book about you guessed it spiders. The book covers many different types of spiders like the tarantula, black widow and green lynx spider to name a few. The pictures are amazing and the explanation of the different spiders is very interesting. I think this book would be perfect for a child that is interested in spiders of someone that just wants a general over view of them. This book is informational and beautiful because of the great pictures that it contains.
