Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Equipped with a heater for boosting performance, this upright machine deep-cleans carpets and rugs by forcing a warm solution of water and cleansing concentrate into fibers and vacuuming up the dirty solution. The 1440-watt machine also scrubs bare floors (but not hardwood floors) and cleans stairs, upholstery, auto interiors, and even mattresses with onboard tools that spray dirty surfaces and crevices with the cleaning solution. A powered hand-tool that either brushes or vacuums at the flick of a switch accompanies the machine and attaches to a flexible accessories hose. The heater's advantage over ordinary machines is that it increases the cleaning solution's temperature (up to but not exceeding 180 degrees F) and prevents the solution from cooling. Here's how the machine works: A plastic bottle for filling with Bissell's Fiber Cleansing Formula (not included) fits into the base. A removable 1-gallon tank contains a bladder to hold clean water for mixing with the cleansing concentrate. (Dirty water vacuumed by the machine collects around the bladder.) A dial offers three settings for various tasks: water-only, normal, and high traffic. A trigger on the machine's handle applies solution as desired. A flow-indicator spins when solution is applied and stops if the tank needs refilling. There's a switch for applying solution through the tools: tough-stain brush, upholstery tool, bare-floor head, crevice tool, pretreat wand. (The machine does not heat solution for tools.) The machine's 12-inch floating brush-roll automatically adjusts for carpet heights. Safe for virtually all carpets and upholstery fabrics, the deep-cleaning method can be turned off for dry-vacuuming delicate wool and Oriental rugs. The machine quickly assembles in five steps, using two bolts and nuts and two Phillips-head screws (all included). An especially understandable assembly/instruction booklet accompanies the machine, which carries a 1-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an awesome cleaner, October 14, 2001

I had just bought this steamer a couple of weeks ago. My hoover died on me and my carpets were becoming a mess with two little ones running around. Anyway, I have found that this is one of the best steamers yet. It is lighter than others I have used. I also like the fact that it keeps the water hot and I do not need to worry about emptying because the water got cold.

I like the fact that the soap mixes separately and you do not have to add soap to the water. This is great when I just want to get a quick spill up and do not have time to do a good cleaning.
You can also set it to how much cleaner you want to mix in or just to use water. This is great when I go to final rinse. I just turn the dial and get plain water. I do not end up wasting cleaning solution because I had to refill for a small patch and then dump to do a final rinse to get the extra soap off the carpet.

It cleans much better than my old steamer. My carpet looks great and it is a good price for what you get. I love the heating of water option. If you do not want the water heated you just flip the switch. It got out some really tough stains in my carpet that have been there for a couple of months.

I also like that you can order extra parts right from bissel and do not have to go through a hoover dealer like I did with my old steam vac. This is definately a great product and I highly reccomend it for anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Carpet Cleaner, April 4, 2002

This review is from: Bissell 1699-1 PowerSteamer Proheat Clearview Plus Powered Hand Tool Carpet Cleaner (Kitchen)
I hesitated buying a carpet cleaner but after spending [money] every 4 months for professional cleaning (I live in a 2-story house), I broke down and bought it. I couldn't believe how clean it got my carpet not to mention how easy it is to use. I have grandchildren that have spilled just about everything you can imagine on my carpet. This machine got every stain out. Buy it. It is well worth the investment. I could kick myself for not buying it sooner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best self-cleaner I've used, October 21, 2001

This review is from: Bissell 1699-1 PowerSteamer Proheat Clearview Plus Powered Hand Tool Carpet Cleaner (Kitchen)
This cleaner works great! I've been borrowing and renting cleaners for the past few years and this one got up stains that have been on the carpet for over a year. I'm in a rental with very cheap carpet that looked absolutely horrible no matter how many times we cleaned it - now it almost looks new.

I was very pleased with how easy to use it is. My box was missing the user manual but I was very relieved to find it on [the manufacturers website]along with a lot of cleaning tips in the faq section of their website. The bucket is so easy to refill and replace and I love that you don't have to mix your solution and water. It also does a very good job at sucking up the water - took almost no time to dry after cleaning. I was also glad that it doesn't take a lot of strength to run. I'd say it's comparable to vacuuming - although the unit is heavy compared to a vacuum, it moves nicely on the wheels.
