5.0 out of 5 stars This is an awesome cleaner
I had just bought this steamer a couple of weeks ago. My hoover died on me and my carpets were becoming a mess with two little ones running around. Anyway, I have found that this is one of the best steamers yet. It is lighter than others I have used. I also like the fact that it keeps the water hot and I do not need to worry about emptying because the water got cold...

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't get soaked! It has a one-year warranty for a reason!
I have a Bissell Proheat PowerSteamer similar to this model that is only two years old, and I've already replaced it with a Hoover SteamVac.

I cleaned our carpet with the Bissell six times in the last two years. The first two times, the Bissell did a great job cleaning our carpet. (After an hour, though, the motor's high-pitched squeal would give me a pounding headache...

I had just bought this steamer a couple of weeks ago. My hoover died on me and my carpets were becoming a mess with two little ones running around. Anyway, I have found that this is one of the best steamers yet. It is lighter than others I have used. I also like the fact that it keeps the water hot and I do not need to worry about emptying because the water got cold.

I like the fact that the soap mixes separately and you do not have to add soap to the water. This is great when I just want to get a quick spill up and do not have time to do a good cleaning.
You can also set it to how much cleaner you want to mix in or just to use water. This is great when I go to final rinse. I just turn the dial and get plain water. I do not end up wasting cleaning solution because I had to refill for a small patch and then dump to do a final rinse to get the extra soap off the carpet.

It cleans much better than my old steamer. My carpet looks great and it is a good price for what you get. I love the heating of water option. If you do not want the water heated you just flip the switch. It got out some really tough stains in my carpet that have been there for a couple of months.

I also like that you can order extra parts right from bissel and do not have to go through a hoover dealer like I did with my old steam vac. This is definately a great product and I highly reccomend it for anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Carpet Cleaner, April 4, 2002

I hesitated buying a carpet cleaner but after spending [money] every 4 months for professional cleaning (I live in a 2-story house), I broke down and bought it. I couldn't believe how clean it got my carpet not to mention how easy it is to use. I have grandchildren that have spilled just about everything you can imagine on my carpet. This machine got every stain out. Buy it. It is well worth the investment. I could kick myself for not buying it sooner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best self-cleaner I've used, October 21, 2001

This review is from: Bissell 1699-1 PowerSteamer Proheat Clearview Plus Powered Hand Tool Carpet Cleaner (Kitchen)
This cleaner works great! I've been borrowing and renting cleaners for the past few years and this one got up stains that have been on the carpet for over a year. I'm in a rental with very cheap carpet that looked absolutely horrible no matter how many times we cleaned it - now it almost looks new.

I was very pleased with how easy to use it is. My box was missing the user manual but I was very relieved to find it on [the manufacturers website]along with a lot of cleaning tips in the faq section of their website. The bucket is so easy to refill and replace and I love that you don't have to mix your solution and water. It also does a very good job at sucking up the water - took almost no time to dry after cleaning. I was also glad that it doesn't take a lot of strength to run. I'd say it's comparable to vacuuming - although the unit is heavy compared to a vacuum, it moves nicely on the wheels.

I have a Bissell Proheat PowerSteamer similar to this model that is only two years old, and I've already replaced it with a Hoover SteamVac.

I cleaned our carpet with the Bissell six times in the last two years. The first two times, the Bissell did a great job cleaning our carpet. (After an hour, though, the motor's high-pitched squeal would give me a pounding headache. No joke. The PowerSteamer's motor is truly "ear-splitting.")

The third time I cleaned with the Bissell, I left the PowerSteamer in an upright position on the carpet to pull the cord, and the PowerSteamer leaked a large puddle of dirty water back into the carpet and drenched the carpet pad. (I learned to roll the PowerSteamer onto a vinyl floor after I cleaned a room so that I could mop up the puddles.)

The next few cleanings, the Bissell hose developed splits in 5 places -- and I stopped cleaning the stairs. :) Then last October, while I was cleaning with the Bissell, I noticed that the PowerSteamer completely lost its suction, and that a large patch of carpet under the Steamer was soaked. The plastic recovery tank had cracked and leaked dirty water on the floor (again) -- which, of course, defeats the entire purpose of the PowerSteamer.

I'm very happy with my Hoover. (I can even clean the nozzel without taking out a screwdriver!:) )

2.0 out of 5 stars Go with the Hoover Steam Vac instead. . ., January 5, 2002
This review is from: Bissell 1699-1 PowerSteamer Proheat Clearview Plus Powered Hand Tool Carpet Cleaner (Kitchen)
I bought this to replace my old Hoover Steam Vac. Big mistake. It is not as sturdy as the Hoover. The latch that keeps the unit in the upright position broke after using only once. The machine leaks water from the tank when first starting it, as well as when you stop it and turn it off. It did have good suction for picking up water, but this machine only had suction when you pulled it towards you (the Hoover's suction works when both pushing and pulling the machine.) The Bissell's heating feature for the water is a nice option, however the "tank-in-tank" is awkward to use and I had to empty it more often than I did with the Hoover. Additionally, the hard floor attachment is flimsy and almost worthless--it kept falling off and eventually the rubber squeege came off. Needless to say I returned it and purchased a new Hoover. If you want something that is more "user friendly" and well built--go with the Hoover.

Six years ago, I bought a canister Bissell carpet cleaner and, on our then 5 year old carpets, I thought it worked great. Well, multiple cleanings later and after much abuse (it actually leaked water everywhere), we gave it away. I also couldn't stand the deafening noise of the motor anymore and I realized that it didn't really clean THAT well. After a lot of comparison shopping, I very reluctantly bought this new Bissell cleaner with the "proheat"..OH MY GOSH...why did I wait soooo long? This machine is phenomenal..it is quiet (yes quiet), it glides over my carpet, it is powerful, it sucks up all the dirt and the grimey water. My carpets look new!!!!! This machine was worth every penny and, to top it off, it stores like an upright vacuum (nice and compact). I am amazed and my husband will be too when he sees this. Even my 3 kids noticed the clean white (yes white) carpets in our living room! Did I mention it GLIDES over your carpet? I'm so floored and so pleased with this carpet cleaner. This is the one to buy to keep your carpets looking great.

i bought this cleaner based on the amazon reviews (...) and am very happy with it. my carpet looks wonderful. my one year old son had ground in cherios, graham crackers, dirt, etc, and it is all gone now. carpet looks new again.

directions were a little hard to follow the first time, but next time i know it will be easier.

i love that the cleaning solution is in it's own container- perfect for small touch ups (you don't end up wasting cleaner). also, the heating element is such a great idea- it really makes sense.

i would buy this again if i had the choice!

3.0 out of 5 stars Cleans well, not very durable, January 2, 2002

This review is from: Bissell 1699-1 PowerSteamer Proheat Clearview Plus Powered Hand Tool Carpet Cleaner (Kitchen)
Putting together the machine and reading the instructions took a bit longer than I thought. The bucket with the dirty water is a snap to remove and insert, but the lid comes off too easily. you have to hold it from the bottom rather than the top or else the whole bucket might fall, dumping out the dirty water all over (this happened to me once). The internal bladder that separates the clean and dirty water is a neat idea, but i found it a little hard to clean, epsecially since their is no sturdy handle once the lid is gone. The separate cleaning solution container is good but it is hard to screw it on so it wont leak. There was a spot on my bedroom floor that stayed sticky for days after a whole bottle of solution leaked out. On the third day we had this machine, the roller brush broke off without a good reason.

On the upside, it was worth the labor at least. This machine left our carpet cleaner and our house smelling fresher. The carpets didnt take very long to dry and its always nice to see how dirty the water is. The bottom part of the machine is easily cleant by swiping a paper towel across it. The extra attachments are wonderful and very useful. It most definetly keeps the water hot, but when the carpet is so warm you cant tell how dry it is. We got this cleaner from Costco, where you get a free hand steamer which is very cool.

Bottom line is that it served its purpose for our one round of cleaning. We returned it and next time I think I am going to go for a Hoover model since our Hoover vacuum cleaner has done such a great job.

I did a lot of research on internet with different consumer reports. The Bissell 1699-1 PowerSteamer ProHeat was rated very high each time. I relied on the consumer reports not affiliated with Bissell and they gave this carper steamer rhe best buy rating. I got it yesterday and cleaned my first room with it today. It is very easy to use, light weight and I don't think a professional cleaner would of done any better. If you are going to buy a steam cleaner and don't check into this steamer before buying I think you will regret it. I am very, very pleased with my Bissell PowerSteamer ProHeat.

2.0 out of 5 stars Clean Carpets but Major Hassle, May 18, 2003

The Good:

My carpets look about twenty times better than they did before I started using this machine. I have two cats, and the amount of dirt it takes out of my carpets is truly staggering. The suction is good, the carpets dry quickly, the design is convenient to store and not too complicated to use. The price was good and it came with lots of extra goodies. It would cost me just as much to hire a professional and it wouldn't be as convenient as doing it myself. If the machine actually worked the way it was supposed to, I would love and adore it.

The Bad:

I don't know if I got a defective model or what, but the water just doesn't get hot enough, or really, hot at all. Then it doesn't spray enough. The soap tank leaks even after ensuring that I have aligned the rubber ring and screwed the cap on tightly. The machine uses tons of soap, even on its normal setting, and I find myself emptying the tank a lot.

The Ugly:

The pieces are fragile, the scrubbing brushes don't seem to scrub very well, the suction only works one way, and it takes me a long time to clean the carpet. To top it off, today, the second time I've used the machine, the attachment tool stopped spraying solution.
