5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT VACUUM
I have been putting off buying a new vacuum for way too long. I am amazed at how quiet this Bissell Powerglide is. It's also very easy to push around. I like the fact that it has height adjustments that allow me to use it on my carpeted floors as well as tile. The tools work great for picking up pet hair from my stairs and couch. 3.0 out of 5 stars So-so vacuum
I bought this vacuum based on Consumer Report's study and the reviews on Amazon. The filtration system seems to be quite good but I am very disappointed at how hard it is to push around. The rear wheels just do not move easily, even after lubricating with graphite. It is noisier than my (upper end) Eureka and not any lighter in weight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, May 3, 2002
This review is from: Bissell 35455 PowerGlide Ultra Lightweight Vacuum (Kitchen)
When our old vacuum died, we needed a new one *fast* because we have four cats and the hair is crazy. We dug out our old CR magazines to find a vacuum that worked well, but didn't cost a whole lot of money.

The suction from the tools is incredible! There's an upholstery tool attachment that literally left creases in the fabric on our couches, because it was so strong! The vacuum is also much smaller and more lightweight than a lot of vacuums out there.

Another consideration was replacing the belt. On our old Hoover, it was nearly impossible to replace the belt (we broke several of the bottom parts trying to do this). This vacuum has four screws to take out--no tabs to push down with screwdrivers while trying to pull the bottom pieces off.

Overall, I am highly pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Vacuum Cleaner, October 15, 2002

After doing a bit of research, I found that CR gave good marks to the Bissel machine. So, I ordered it from Amazon (free shipping), and it took a mere 3 days to arrive.

The vacuum is light, QUIET (I originally bought a Hoover but it was so loud I returned it), has a nice length hose for the cleaning tools, and has a long power cord (35'). As for performance, it does a great job, and the suction from the upholstery attachment is indeed very strong (actually, almost too strong). The bag is easy to reach/replace (just pop off the front cover), and the vacuum has both a pre-filter (to prevent objects from entering and damaging the fan), and a post-filter (to keep dirt from exiting the bag). (I'm not a fan of bagless vacuums. They must be emptied more frequently and are very messy to empty. And don't be fooled into thinking you are saving a lot of money with a bagless; the better ones have expensive HEPA filters that must replaced). The only real problem with the machine is that because it's lightweight, it has a tendency to tip over when using the cleaning tools.

In sum, unless you are willing to pay about $175-$350 for a top of the line vacuum cleaner, the Bissel at only $99 here @ Amazon is a best buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great, February 4, 2003

I just got my 35455 from Amazon and tried it out on my new carpet and floors. Suction power is great, brush picks up a lot of loose fibers and the vaccum is pretty light compared to a Eureka. It is not quiet as advertised but it isn't loud either. The noise is sort of a low pitched whine. The only negative about it is the rubber bumper marks up my walls (I'm a guy so I tend to just push it into the furniture and walls). So I took off the rubber bumper and that solved that problem.

Overall for 99 bucks its a pretty good vacuum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything I wanted, January 8, 2003

I wanted a hose attachment, rug and floor options, long cord, long hose, light weight, disposable filter bags, (bagless is bologna!), solidly colored, I had no desire to be able to SEE the garbage after I've vacuumed it up. I got all that, plus it was beautiful to look at. It was not quiet, actually there is a high pitched whistle. As if that isn't bad enough there is a huge plaque on the front that boldly says Quiet, I hoped it was just a sticker, it's not. Silly. It's a little silly that the rug beater has to stay spinning when using the hose. You have to put the handle of the upright in the lowest positionor it tips over when using the hose. But it was everytning I wanted for the lowest price.

Looked for a long time for a vacuum cleaner that was lightweight, powerful, quiet and priced right. This was the one. Can't beat the quality for the price. Alot quieter than some of the more expensive comperable vacuums. The free delivery was also a bonus and arrived five days before listed. Thanks Amazon.com!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly good for the money., September 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bissell 35455 PowerGlide Ultra Lightweight Vacuum (Kitchen)
We've had the expensive-end Hoovers and other supposedly high-performance vacuums, but this is the winner. I've got a long-coat German Shepherd and a pale shorthair cat and a house that accumulates dust and spider webs rapidly: the Powerglide takes it all on gracefully and relatively quietly. It's the only thing (and this after trying a Dirt Devil and Electrolux hand-helds) that gets pet hair off the upholstery with no effort at all. Great attachments, great durability, great filtration, great on dusty floors and carpets and floating furballs, easy maintenance... what more can I say? I'm not one to get excited about vacuums, but this one's pretty great.

This vacuum is heavy and very noisy. On board tools are awkward to use, and incomplete. Replacement bags are outrageously expensive. Would not recommend this machine at any price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Belt arrived broken, June 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bissell 35455 PowerGlide Ultra Lightweight Vacuum (Kitchen)
...I paid [item price] (I like the price). As we opened the box, we all felt in love with it's light weight and look. But when we tested it. We found out the brush is not totating. I call the service dept. The guy told me to unscrew the brush to check. I found out that the belt was broken. He said he will send me 2 extra belts on UPS groud but it might take more than 10 days to get to me. Now I have to wait 10 days to vacuume my house. Why am I the unlucky one?
