Great vacuum, great value., April 3, 2002
This review is from: Bissell 35755 Cleanview HEPA Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I spent a lot of time looking for a replacement vacuum after my Eureka broke. I saw a lot of other cheaper vacuums out there, but they just didn't have the features that I wanted, or a name that stood for reliability. For the money, this vacuum is great. It really picks up the dirt and cat hair from my carpet. It's suction power is impressive! And Bissell offers probably the best value for the options, like the bagless technology and attachments. The hose for the attachments also has a good suction power. It may even be a little too strong if the object you're hand vacuuming isn't tied down. When I'm using the hose on my bathroom rugs, I have to hold them down because the suction is so strong. The attachments are also well located on the vacuum. They don't fall off or get in the way like attachments on other vacuums sometimes do. They stay in their place really well. The bagless technology is very convenient and easy to use. You can see how much you picked up and how full the dirt cup by just looking at the front of the vacuum. The best part about the dirt cup is that it is easy to remove. Just move the lever over and pull out the cup. Then you can dump the dirt and rinse off the cup in the sink, stick it back in, and then push the lever back. Really simple. The headlight lights up dark places pretty well. It is located a little higher than usual, which is a slight disadvantage when you get up under items. This is the only inconvienence I've had with the vacuum so far. The filters are nice and sturdy and washable. They aren't HEPA filters, but they are nice, quality filters that should do the job for most people. The power cord is also nice and long, with a flip down top latch, so you don't have to unwind the cord to go. The vacuum has plenty of carpet height settings. Also, it has two settings for the handle (plus upright) -- one for vacuuming normally, the other for vacuuming under furniture. Very handy. Assembly is quick and simple. All I had to do was snap on the handle and screw it in with one screw. I am very impressed with this vacuum and I would highly recommend it to anyone - small apartment to big house.

Decent value 4 price, but lacking in some key areas., August 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Bissell 35755 Cleanview HEPA Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
Let me state that I am a stickler for quality and functionality in a product (everyone should be). I'm not asking for much. After researching and shopping extensively for a decent bagless upright vac in the $250 and under range, many I recently purchased greatly fell short of their potential, due to many glaring design flaws or shortcomings. It blows my mind how some manufacturers bring utter junk to market!!! As just one example, a bagless vac (not a Bissell) I bought recently (and returned), had great suction, great ergonomic features, great ease of use, BUT the dirt collection bin was cumbersome and messy to use when emptying its contents. It actually had a filter INSIDE the 2-piece dirt collection bin (2-piece bins are a joke and unwieldy), and it always came loose and apart when emptying the dirt, so that one had to actually handle and re-clean the dirty filter after every usage!!! Which is why I came here to amazon to conduct some research the other day, and found a 5-star rating for this Bissell. Overall, it is a good bagless vac, and a good value for the money, but it lacks in some areas. Mainly: 1) It is way too noisy and slightly hard to push. It does not roll as easily as many other vacs, even on hard floors and highest settings on low pile carpets. My older Fantom Wildcat glides over carpets, and a recent Hoover I tried almost propelled itself it was so effortless. 2) It needs a side or front handle for those moments when you must vacuum a small throw rug, bathroom rug, or stairs. How do you grasp this vac properly/ergonomically when you must engage in these common tasks?! 3) It does NOT come with a universal, 'upholstery' attachment tool!! What a glaring ommission this is, given that most other vacs come with this very basic tool included. I always use such a tool for cleaning dog hair off of my couch, vacuuming bed mattresses when replacing sheets, cleaning stairs and inside closets, etc. I don't think Bissell realizes how necessary this tool is. 4) The handle seems to wiggle a bit and has some play, even though it is slid in entirely with the screw attached. Over time, this play will get much worse. I may just have to krazy glue or epoxy the handle in. The positives are: 1) It is a good value for the price, and works decently. 2) It has a very user-friendly and well engineered dirt collection bin which is a pleasure to use. Mega-kudos to Bissell for this design. Interestingly enough, though, this vac was rated LOWEST in overall scores amongst a field of about 25 upright vacs that were tested in the September 2002 issue of 'Consumer Reports' magazine!!! They claim emissions and noise are high, and cleaning ability is merely average. It is incredible how the majority of the reviewers here give this product 5 stars, and CR mag rates it low to average!!!! I tell you, its really difficult being an 'educated consumer' these days due to conflicting claims. I'll keep the Bissell anyway, as I am at wits end looking for the holy grail of affordable bagless uprights. My conclusion is it doesn't exist!

Super Sucker!, August 23, 2003
This review is from: Bissell 35755 Cleanview HEPA Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
Normally not the type of person to write a review about a VACUUM CLEANER, but this isn't your run of the mill vacuum either! My old vacuum died the same day that the Bissell Bagless here showed up on my "Gold Box"... very curious. Amazon must know more about me and my recommendations than they let on! Anyway, I bought the vacuum, put it together in, like, 5 minutes (requires a phillips head screwdriver) and started cleaning. Wow! After running the Bissell over the rug in my living room I stopped to check the dust collector - holy [cow] was there a lot of dirt, carpet fuzz, hair, etc in that cup! I couldn't believe it! We had just cleaned the rug a few days earlier with the old bagged vac - amazing! I dumped the cup and kept going... the rug looked amazing; kind of weird to describe I guess (had to be there!) The wand/hose attachment is very sweet too. I was able to get in to the little space where the molding meets the rug (never could get that spot with the old vac or the dustbuster!) and suck out years of dust and grody hair that had taken up residence in this crevice. Long story, but this is the GREATEST vacuum I have ever personally used on a rug - and it does a SUPER job on bare wood floors too! Oh, and the stairs... clean as a whistle. Go ahead and buy this vacuum and throw away the old upright in the closet, that "trendy" Euro Shark (doesn't work anyway, right?) the little battery powered dustbuster (that won't pick up anything larger than a cake crumb). All of 'em can be replaced with this vacuum!
