Jan Caballero es un cuarentón fracasado que pierde el empleo y queda en la calle. Tiene entonces que enfrentarse con la falta de hogar y de alimentos, pero también con un pasado que pudo ser: el sueño fallido de dedicar su vida al arte. La oportunidad para sentirse creativo llega cuando conoce a una anciana que recoge muebles y objetos destartalados. Esta mujer no tiene nombre ni recuerdos, pero sustituye su falta de pasado con las historias que inventa para justificar el estado deplorable de las cosas que vende en su bazar. Jan, entonces, se asocia con ella y echa mano de sus habilidades para convertir esos cacharros en verdaderos objetos de leyenda, logrando así crear un negocio en el que los clientes saben que son engañados, pero pagan con gusto por ello. Años después de que se rompe la sociedad Jan decide recopilar en una bitácora tanto sus memorias como algunas de las leyendas que la anciana solía repetir a los clientes, recreando así las Bitácoras de Soledad.
