3.0 out of 5 stars Seamus Fox's big change
Seamus Fox changed, and not quite for the good.

The previous book in the series, the first one depicted Seamus as being an uptight, no nonsense kind of guy, but then in this book he kind of just breaks down and loses... character? I really dislike it when author's do this. It doesn't fit when you make person A solid, and then have them turn into a pile of...

This is the second book in the Las Vegas Vampire series.
Seamus is a 370 year old vampire. He has been celibate for 200 years. His main focus is politics. He is the best friend and campaign manager for the current vampire president, Ethan (High Stakes). They are currently campaigning for re-election.
Cara is a stripper by night and going to school to become a vet by day. But she also has some wonderful contradictions. For example, when she dances she only strips behind a screen. There is more but I don't want to spoil anything :)
Seamus is immediately drawn to the woman he first sees dancing behind the screen.
But after leaving the club, a vampire fight starts in the alley and Cara is caught in the middle. Both of their lives are going to be changed...
This is a great follow up to the first. As usual Erin gives you a fast paced story with wonderful characters. Seamus and Cara are great together. There are many laugh out loud moments. Some very hot sex scenes, and a little action thrown in.
Can't wait for the next one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected, March 7, 2007

Can I give it 3 1/2 stars? I didn't originally order this book because I thought that it was going to pick up Brittany Baldizzi's love story up where the first book, High Stakes, left off. I wasn't intrigued enough. But I was wrong!

This is an entirely different story starring vampire President Ethan's right hand man, the stuffy and political Sheamus Fox who, after 2 centuries of abstinence, has fallen for the completely inapropriate Cara Kim, shadow stripper at a local Vegas club. Sheamus is stodgey, bumbling, and lovable at the same time. Cara is your typical woman in a first serious relationship where you don't want to be a nag but you have concerns. In her case her concerns are should she be drinking blood from him all the time, have they moved in together too soon, is that vamp goon trying to kill her, does Sheamus not like the new pink curtains, ect.

All of the likable characters from High Stakes appear again, even those you werne't sure if you really should like. And Ethan's fueding with Donatelli will come to a drunken conclusion. All in all it was a good book in its own right and i'm glad I finally picked it up!

5.0 out of 5 stars fun vampire romance, December 9, 2006
This review is from: Bit the Jackpot (Vegas Vampires, Book 2) (Paperback)
In Las Vegas where vampires and other paranormal species reside, the rarest species is Cara Kim, a virgin stripper. Over three centuries old Seamus Fox is the campaign manager for the reelection of Ethan Carrick as president of the Vampire Nation, but an ugly incident has brought Cara to his attention. Ethan's opponent Roberto Donatelli caused a fracas that left Cara's life in danger as he does not care what happens to the inferior mortals and she is collateral damage.

Seamus converts Cara to save her life. However, he is shocked how attractive he is to her, but assumes she heats his blood because he has abstained from sex for two hundred years. On the other hand, Cara struggles with this alpha hunk ordering her and her five pets around though she would not mind taking a bite or two from him. As they fall in love, Roberto raises the stakes planning to use the new born conversion as a pawn to eliminate Seamus.

Vampire romance readers will feel they BIT THE JACKPOT with this fun contemporary tale. The background contains a biting "political" campaign in which one side uses bloody tricks that would have sent Lee Atwater roving for a different job. Throw in Vegas and a likable pairing of an abstemious vampire and a newbie and that leads to a delightful read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read..., August 2, 2007
This review is from: Bit the Jackpot (Vegas Vampires, Book 2) (Paperback)
Seamus Fox is a very responsible vampire. As campaign manager for Ethan Carrick's bid for re-election, Seamus always conducts himself so as to be above any sort of disreputable behavior. The election polls rule his life. But then he meets stripper Cara Kim.... Cara is exactly the sort of human Seamus should avoid but he finds himself drawn to her. Both of their lives are about to take a serious change in this sequel to HIGH STAKES.

Erin McCarthy sure can write a funny story! I love the continuing involvement of the characters from HIGH STAKES although it is not totally necessary to read the first book in order to understand and appreciate the humor of BIT THE JACKPOT. However, there are some ongoing threads that carry over from the first book, with a few more issues left dangling for the next book, BLED DRY. Erin McCarthy provides enough details that one can easily pick up on any of these subplots regardless of whether one has read the previous book.

Watching Seamus unwind is a lot of fun! Seamus has been so obsessed with the election that it is almost a relief to see him release all of that tension. Cara is an odd combination as she does not fit the stereotypical image of a stripper. In fact, she performs her sets behind a screen because she is embarrassed! However, the real treat in this story is Ringo (aka Kyle) and the subplot involving his struggles as a vampire.

BIT THE JACKPOT is an enjoyable read! Erin McCarthy does an excellent job at infusing humor throughout the tale. There is never a dull moment, and some of the scenes will stand out for quite some time, particularly some of the "pink" scenes. What a fun story!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny Vampire Romance......, February 11, 2007
This review is from: Bit the Jackpot (Vegas Vampires, Book 2) (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book by Erin McCarthy even more than the 1st one of the series. I really liked the main characters and enjoyed hearing more about the characters from the previous book. I love Erin McCarthy's sense of humor and some parts were laugh out loud funny! I won't go into detail about the story as other reviewers have but will say, if you enjoy EM's books, definitely give her Vampire series a try, it is worth it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Sexy Vampire tale, January 15, 2007
By
Judy "book reader" (Cincinnati, ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bit the Jackpot (Vegas Vampires, Book 2) (Paperback)
Bit The Jackpot by Erin McCarthy continues the funny and sensuous tale of vampires.

Seamus Fox is a no nonsense, play by the book campaign manager for his friend Ethan Carrick. He meets a woman while searching out the aunt of his boss. This woman Cara Kim is the most sensual mortal he has ever met. When Cara is fatally injured Seamus turns her in order to save her. This doesn't go over very well with Cara.

Cara is working as a stripper behind a screen in order to get money for vet school. She brushes Seamus off but then wakes up after being hit by a car to be one of the undead. Cara does not like this change in her living status one little bit. Even though she is attracted to Seamus she fights it with everything in her. But there is something about this vampire that sets her soul on fire.

As Seamus teaches Cara her new lifestyle, danger is lurking at every turn. This danger makes them realize their love is a love for all eternity.

Bit The Jackpot is a gem. I laughed and sighed all through it. It was a treat to revisit character from High Stakes. This story will delight any romance reader with its funny characters and sexy ways. I am looking forward to the next story... Bled Dry.

3.0 out of 5 stars Seamus Fox's big change, October 9, 2007
Seamus Fox changed, and not quite for the good.

The previous book in the series, the first one depicted Seamus as being an uptight, no nonsense kind of guy, but then in this book he kind of just breaks down and loses... character? I really dislike it when author's do this. It doesn't fit when you make person A solid, and then have them turn into a pile of mush in the next book. There has to be a gradual change so it's realistic and so you can follow through with it.

Other than that large flaw, the book proved to be fun, and funny. The characters tend to grow on you, and I like the fact that all of the characters are still interacting with one another in all of the books.
