Book Description

August 19, 2009
Francine O'Malley is a confused seventeen year old trying to survive life with her whacky, unwed, devout catholic mother and her gruff but gentle-spirited eighty year old uncle. Finding her father, the handsome hotdog vendor that seduced her mother and then walked away, is paramount in her life. During her senior year in high school, Francine learns some of the hardest lessons that life has to offer. Yet, in spite of these conditions, hope is at the core of the young girl's life. Because life is not for sissies, Francine finds an inner strength through it all. Written with humor, wit and insight into the minds of characters young and old, the story is unpredictable and real.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read, September 8, 2009
This review is from: A Bit of Knowledge (Paperback)
"A Bit of Knowledge" was definitely a good book. Written by a local Philadelphia author, this book shares insight into a high school girl's place in her slightly dysfunctional family. Her journey over the span of a few years is relatable to anyone who has ever gone through high school, or experienced problems with their mother, or endured the death of a close loved one. But despite hardships, the characters in this book show courage and prove it to be an overall feelgood novel. Whether you purchase it as a gift or for yourself, you won't be disappointed!

If you have ever had a family, been around one, had a best friend or been in love then this book, by Alison schiedel Dittmar is a MUST READ! Filled with all the vibrance of real life, its bitterness and joy, this author captures it beautifully! No matter how thick the clouds, the sun is still out there and it will shine through. Alison has given these characters great depth, experience and growth. Life is ever changing and the hope of a new day and it's reality is marvelously portrayed! So many you read are gone the moment you put them down. This one will stay with me for a long time to come! Can't help but wonder how they are doing! Waiting, with great anticipation for the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down, April 14, 2010

This review is from: A Bit of Knowledge (Paperback)
Ok, so I have 5 children and rarely get a moment to sit down and devour- I mean devour a book. Happens that I get sick, and plop myself in my bed- and read this book cover to cover. I can honestly say that when I am reading a book, I usually can figure out what is going to happen next- but with this one, I could not! The author kept me turning and turning pages, till my eyes would give out- and then I would wake and turn and turn the pages again. It was heartwarming, gut-wrenching and humerus all in one. I found myself crying and laughing and reflecting on my own life and coming of age. This book has it all, joy, pain, love, hate...LIFE. Well done, I can't wait for the next one. I particularly loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter- they made me reflect, and I wanted to absorb each one.
