4.0 out of 5 stars BitDefender a Great Purchase
When my virus protection was about to expire, I was in a quandary. I wasn't at all happy with the Norton I had purchased last year. 4.0 out of 5 stars BitDefender a Great Purchase, February 12, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: BitDefender Antivirus 10.0 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
When my virus protection was about to expire, I was in a quandary. I wasn't at all happy with the Norton I had purchased last year. And, I wasn't especially pleased with the McAfee I had used the year before that. When I checked the local stores, there didn't seem to be anything else to choose from. I checked Amazon and found more options, plus plenty of customer comments to help me decide. My son told me that BitDefender had been given the highest rating by Consumer Reports. That, together with other customer comments on Amazon, helped me decide to give it a try. So far, I'm delighted with its performance. In fact, when I first installed it, it found a virus and some suspicious cookies that Norton never caught. It doesn't appear to be interferring with my system operations (unlike Norton and McAfee), it and doesn't constantly interrupt with pop-ups and unnecessary warnings. The best thing is that it gives me two years of protection for the price of one year with the other guys.

However, the company's customer service is either poor or non-existent. I was having issues with the software and tried to contact the company. First getting ahold of anyone is nearly impossible. I found them to non-responsive and I am still trying to get my issue resovlved.

The product is good but you can get software that works just as well from other providers. I suggest AVG.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product, No Support, April 21, 2007
This review is from: BitDefender Antivirus 10.0 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
Good news: BitDefender found a dormant worm in a deleted email on our PCs that Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2007 missed. Also, BD has very little impact on our systems or applications speed, which is why we uninstalled NIS - we had 8 months left on the Norton 3-PC license but our two older PCs (4 & 5 yrs old) had slowed down due to NIS so much that they were practically unusable. The hourly BD updates are almost unnoticable.

Bad news: when we installed BD on the 2nd PC (2-PCs for 2-yrs license), we made the mistake of using my spouse's email and passwd instead of mine, which we had used on the 1st PC. Bad move. It had trouble starting, and modules were erratically turning on and off. We logged into the BitDefender site and found that the same exact license was registered to two different accounts. We uninstalled it, and reinstalled it using my email and passwd as a 2nd key, and that showed up on my account OK. However, there was no way to delete my spouse's account or key on their website. Her copy still ran funky, but at least it started.

We used the online chat support and they were friendly and asked that we download two tools from their website and provide them sysinfo dumps by email. We did the dumps and sent them as a reply to their follow-up email with the BD trouble ticket # in the Subject. No reply after 3 days. We sent two other queries, one with the ticket # and one without, both explaining that we needed her bad account and key deleted, as there was probably some server license issues going on that were hindering the operation on her PC. Again, no response.

We wound up uninstalling her 2nd copy of my package, and buying a 2nd 2-PC for 2-yrs package. At least those packages via Amazon were about $15 cheaper than a 1-PC for 1-yr CD version directly from SoftWin (BitDefender), so even with the dual CD purchase it is working out to only $16 per yr per PC (NIS was $35/yr/PC). Since we installed her 2nd package using a different email and passwd, and an alias for her name, there doesn't seem to be any key conflicts causing her BitDefender to run whacky.

Sorry for the long-winded comments, but we wanted you to know that if everything goes great, the product is fast, low-resource impact, and finds stuff Norton misses. BUT (big but), if you got a problem, you're on your own, pal! Tech support is zip, nada, zed, zero. Thankyouverymuch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great antivirus software, April 5, 2007
By
This review is from: BitDefender Antivirus 10.0 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
I'm very impressed with how non intrusive this software is. I used Norton for approximately 5 years before I changed to Bit Defender. I didn't realize how bogged down my system was until I made the change. The system scan is very quick (approx. 8-10 minutes in comparison to 20-25 minutes from Norton). I don't even notice when the software is updating. I'm very pleased with the program thus far and I highly recommend it!

I purchased a new computer and wanted the best. After some homework I decided on BitDefender. It has worked flawlessly ever since. Even the spy detector has worked great. I ran spybot after each scan and come up with nothing each time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy, March 4, 2007

I made the unfortunate mistake of reading fantastic reviews for this product and trying it out myself. I went online and purchased the program, downloaded, and installed on my pc. Installation worked perfectly. I ran a scan and it even found viruses that Mcafee missed. However, any program that used the internet now freezes or takes forever to load. After closing web browsers I have to restart before my PC recovers. I unistalled the program and now everything works great. I'm shopping somewhere else for my Antivirus needs.

I installed this item and the Bit Defender locked up my computer and made it very difficult to access the internet, email, etc, similar to the way AOL also locks itself into your computer and makes using the computer difficult to enjoy, at best. I had to take the computer to a local ISP technician to clean the computer of all the Bit Defender files and folders. It was a $150 lesson and I would not buy Bit Defeneder 10 again, or trust the Bit Defender company products.

4.0 out of 5 stars First impressions, August 26, 2007

This review is from: BitDefender Antivirus 10.0 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
I recently uninstalled a "well-known" anti-virus program because I thought my PC was infected with viruses (it was doing strange things - see last paragraph). I now have BitDefender Antivirus v10 - Build 247. Although I haven't had any viruses picked up, my PC, which runs on Windows XP Home, has been working better than ever - perhaps the previous anti-virus program was the problem in itself. It boots up faster and works faster even though I have a dial-up connection. It's not working as hard either (I have a Pentium processor - by the way, make sure your vents are dust-free). The reason I wanted to post so soon is that after BitDefender installation I did have a problem mentioned by another reviewer - at first it didn't seem that Internet Explorer 7 was going to work - it just seemed to hang there running. I'm not sure if that's because I had uninstalled another product or not. Anyway, I left it run a while and then rebooted twice (including a complete shut-down); and everything has been fine since. I am extremely pleased so far.

I did find that getting to the "knowledge base" was a little difficult on the BitDefender website, but choosing the right product finally got me there. Once I had some direction on how to schedule a scan, I really like the BitDefender interface. I also like how the little "File Zone" window tells you what is going on. I could never tell what my previous program was doing.

I had been getting stack overflow messages, problems disconnecting my dial-up, and mysterious shut-offs (which could have been dust-related as previously mentioned). Most of this occurred after upgrading from IE6 to IE7. Whatever the reason, IE7 is now running well with this product; and the accelerator seems happy, too. (FYI - I'm also running Spy Sweeper, and it seems to do well with BitDefender.)

Hands down the worse product I have seen in quite some time. Of course, if the rapid pace of life is leaving you flustered and needing to take the time to smell the roses, this is perfect for you. Rest assured that you will be thinking it's the slow-paced 1980s as your computer struggles to start up or launch programs. Nano-seconds will become leisurely coffee breaks, all thanks to Bit Defender's ability to decelerate what was once a fast computer. It has just one more little flaw (in addition to incompatibility with that unheard of word processing program "WordPerfect"), it protect the computers from you more effectively than from viruses. You might as well put your computer into the Tulsa time capsule with the 1957 Plymouth Belvedere; when reopened, it will be as ruined as the rustbucket the Plymouth turned into.
