I had heard great things about bitdefender from my parents, who have it on their computer and have had no major issues with it, so I decided to give it a try. This was the worst decision I've ever made when it comes to anti virus software. I have had Norton, Mcafee, PC Security Shield, and Kaspersky. All of which have been pretty friendly to my pc. Bitdefender was not so kind.
I started off by trying to install it onto my computer (run on Windows xp-32 bit). Once it scanned and I got things going it suggested that I remove all my other antivirus software, ok. I proceeded to hit next to allow it to remove the software for me and all of the sudden error messages began popping up. It kept saying things like bitdefender has encountered an error and must close, you must restart your computer. I restarted only to come to a blue error screen saying my computer has shut down to prevent further damage. I restarted and hit f8 to run in safe mode, did a system restore, and tried again. Same result.
So I gave up on my computer and went to my wife's laptop with Vista. Same error messages same prompts to restart etc. Once I finally got her computer to accept the software I restarted and now faced the problem of NOTHING working. Her entire computer froze, nothing would open or do anything. I even had a hard time getting the task manager to open. So by this time I'm already frustrated and I give up on her pc and go back to mine. I did another system restore and left my computer run without protection.
I hadn't completed the full registration of my product so I had to contact customer service via email. It took them 4 days to get back to me with my problem only to instruct me to do a system dump of my information so they could analyze it. I did what they asked and waited another 4-5 days.

To the previous reviewers who had problems, and for any future customers, here's a simple installation tip. Go to the Bitdefender website, load the uninstall tool, and USE IT!

Once that's done, installation is a breeze.

This latest version appears to use fewer resources that the 2009 edition.

Visually, this latest version looks better than its older siblings.

I've been using Bitdefender since 2008, after a nasty virus infection using another brand.

The long and short of it is, it works.

Ive been using bitdefender software since 2004, and it used to be fast, accurate, easy to use, and reliable. This latest version, however, is a total departure from that. No longer simple, it now has a bloated interface which is not intuitive (even on the novice setting), it also slowed down my computer, and I have experienced several blue screens since installing this version. The worst part though is the many false positives - blocking harmless websites (like amazon) when parental controls were not even on. There seems to be no solution for this. I've since uninstalled the program and now use Norton 360 with no problems.

BitDefender Total Security offers everything I expect in an internet security package, at a price that is still somewhat cheaper than other's high end security software, and with more features than most other's high end products.

Total security comes with virus protection, registry cleaner, password protection, hard drive checkup, off-site backup, performance checks, spam control, and performance quality checks. It also offers game mode, though I never use it since BitDefender has such a small impact on performance. The user can choose a Basic, Intermediate, and Expert interfaces so you can decide how much control you have.

BitDefender offers good performance. BitDefender has always received good grades on how well it detects malware, so you can feel safe there. It has below average impact on system performance. The spam filter works well for me, catching most things that Nortons on my central email misses. The registry cleaner does not delete everything like most do, but instead marks deletion risk as low, medium and high. I choose to delete low and medium (never found a high) and so far no mistakes. I have never compared loading speeds between internet software, so I cannot comment on that.

One feature others really like (I prefer write-ups) is that BitDefender has a library of videos that tell you how to do almost anything.

BitDefender allows you to upgrade to new versions for free. This means you can save money by buying Total Security 2010 and get two years for the price of one year of 2011, and then upgrade. Just a word of warning; make sure you completely remove the old version.

I used to refuse to give any security software 5 stars since all brands either do not protect well, or the ones that protect well do not work well on all computers. There does seem to be a tradeoff between stability and protection. But BitDefender does seem to offer the best combination of both.

2011 version of bit defender is "buggy." Will run multiple copies of a scan function, regenerate new ones as fast as the previous ones are closed. In addtion, it will attempt to run multiple copies of full system scan all at the same time, at that point task manager will not even work. Submitted numerous support requests since 2/4, have yet to hear on any of them. Bitdefender will now stop working, with or without error messages. At this time the PC will also lock-up. Their tech support seems either dis-interested in assisting or unable to assit, possibly due to what i am sure is an over-wellming number of complaints and/or problems.
