More About the Author

Robert Rodi (b.1956) was born in Chicago, a town seething with literary and musical energy, and he has spent his life immersed in their currents. His first novels, which quickly gained him cult status, were deftly drawn satires of the city's gay scene ("Fag Hag," "Closet Case," "Drag Queen"). While continuing to write fiction (most recently, "Baby") he's branched out into nonfiction, the better to share his enthusiasm for the world of canine agility (in "Dogged Pursuit") and all things Italian, specifically the great Tuscan horse race, the Palio ("Seven Seasons In Siena").

He's also written comic books for both Vertigo and Marvel, and maintained a self-described "guerilla lit-crit" blog about Jane Austen called "Bitch In a Bonnet: Reclaiming Jane Austen from the Stiffs, the Snobs, the Simps and the Saps" that has now been collected in two volumes. He's also an actor, spoken-word performer, jazz singer, and the front man for the fusion rock band 7th Kind (whose CD "Sea Monster" is available on Amazon).

Rodi is as snarky and satirical as Austen herself, and has a refreshing way of reminding us that she loved to poke fun at even her own favorite characters.

Okay so this is not as good as the first book he wrote, maybe it was the books he wrote about. I could not finish Northanger Abby. But liked his take on Emma and Persuasion. He is so right on the fact that none of us would dare introduce our selves to Jane Austen as she is so intelligent and clever that we wouldn't survive saying hello. She is so on target with her wit and sarcasm and clever take on things. She is not romantic at all. She skips right over that kind of stuff and gets inside our minds and hearts as well as her characters. Her stories are more about moral fiber and decency and all the folks who have those attributes and those who don't. She is the best.

I find I can come back to Robert Rodi's Bitch in a Bonnet the same way I can come back to the Bitch. Even when I disagree with something he says, he makes me see something new, or see something in a new way, in the Austen text. And he makes me laugh -- and snort, and offend nearby strangers with maniacal cackles. Bitch in a Bonnet began as a blog, and the immediacy and intimate feel of a blog survive the transition to book form. Mr. Rodi's insight and analytical expertise are at least as sharp as his humor -- much like his Bitch herself. Higher praise it is difficult to imagine.

I never laughed so hard. His style is perfect, his analysis is penetrating, he makes you see sides of a situation you may not have considered before. It is done in the same style as the Bitch herself; neither suffers fools gently. A MUCH more satisfying read
than any of the pallid Jane Austen wannabees because he catches her wit so well.

I hope somewhere Jane Austen is reading it and laughing hysterically too! Understood at last!

This is Rodi's second commentary book on Jane Austen's books. His style and analysis is very clever. He gives his reader some fresh (at least to me) viewpoints about Jane's work that you may not agree with, but that will likely cause you to re-read the actual words. I found some of his insights very enlightening, and, overall, he is fun to read.

This delightful book continues what Mr. Rodi's first volume began, and what a romp it is! I so appreciate the author's point of view.

I waited two years for this book! I am a true Jane Austen freak, and I devour anything I can find about her. In this book, a follow-up to Bitch in a Bonnet, Volume 1, Robert Rodi dissects the remaining three Austen novels, revealing Austen not as a writer of :"chick lit:" but as a true satirist and sharp-eyed (and sharp-tongued!) observer of life around her. Rodi's language gets a little vulgar at times, but I found myself laughing out loud far more often than than I "tsk tsked." The two books are must-reads for Jane Austen fans, who will only come to love her more.Worth

I was so grateful to have found Mr. Rodi's first Bitch in a Bonnet that I reviewed it immediately. My praise for this second volume would follow in the same vein, so I will just add this...as Jane Austen's powers as an artist grew with each of her subsequent publishings, so too has Mr. Rodi's skills as an Austen analyst. His love and respect for our favorite author is evident in every page.
