Book Description

November 1991
In the linked short stories of Bitches Ride Alone, Laura Chester returns to her signature subject matter with headlong, unguarded candor. Chronicling girlhood crushes, bittersweet love affairs, and erotic fantasies, Chester's narrator, a nameless divorcee in her middle forties, examines the tension between the idealism of womanly desire and the shortcomings of reality. The titles of the stories say it all: "First-base Boyfriend," "The Never Enough Club," "How Not to Seduce Your Therapist," "The Art of Kissing at the Age of Forty." Chester's courage, honesty, and humor are here in abundance and are a healing balm to every woman's romantic misery.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Chester looks unflinchingly at loss and alienation . . . but she also offers hope. --Los Angeles Times

Chester invents a free-flowing, associative style, at once a hypnotic literary technique, a liberating ethic, and a feminine metaphysic, desire pulsating in the everyday. --American Book Review

It is the exuberance of this collection that is its most charming feature. Loose and lanky, the prose seems to thrive on rawness and recklessness . . . Chester's best writing comes from a radical girlhood curious, impatient, impetuous, and alive. --Review of Contemporary Fiction --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: Bitches Ride Alone (Paperback)
Flawed, uneven, idiosyncratic -- and damn brilliant! Buy it and jump on for a ride full of surprises. Even the most butt-chapped cynic will find they've tender spots unguessed at under Chester's whip-hand wielding words like snapping leather. But for all the astringent clarity and cantering alacrity of her writing, Laura C's work is a celebration of romance, albeit romance with eyes open, lights on, and post-childhood: a wry mix of love-shy-but-lusting, wary-but-hopeful, soignee-but-spastic marriage of desire and experience. Bitches Ride Alone not only captures what it is to be adult and taking a chance on love in this new present era but brings it back alive from the jungle of id and ego. If you're a woman, I imagine you'll envy the spunk and brio of Chester's writing; as a man, I was happily chagrined to learn from it anew what a powerfully wonderful mystery it is that women don't rule the world while keep men as semi-tamed pets...
