Book Description

July 31, 2003
When Arden picked her widowed mother up at the airport, she had an ominous feeling. Old rumors in the family attributed magic powers to her mother's cooking. Every time Arden attended a committee meeting, armed with some of her mother's baked goods, her apprehension increased. After eating the goodies, people behaved in strange ways and the unexpected happened. Along the way to knowing her mother, her sisters, and herself, Arden watched as her mother collected a noted cardiologist, construction tycoon, restaurant millionaire, and learned judge as 'devoted' friends and suitors. For your enjoyment of this humorous reading, Arden has included her mother's recipes, but reproducing her magic depends on you.

About the Author

Ms. Murray has had ample chance to learn about women and how they relate to each other and to men. First, as the third of four daughters, next as a student at Smith, a women's college, and then sharing an apartment with three girls first in graduate school and later Oak Ridge while working at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Murray observed every conceivable female relationship except motherhood. After marriage, this was righted with the birth of two daughters. Murray lives with her husband in the college town of Newark, Delaware. In addition to A Bite of Magic, Murray has written non- fiction articles for Delaware Today and the Philadelphia Inquirer and three mysteries, one of which, The Chinese Treasure, will come out this fall, available through 1stBooksLibrary. Next year a children's book, When the Sun Came to Tea and a sequel to A Bite of Magic will be published.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun novella, rotten typesetting, November 15, 2002

A nice little book. Slight, but fun. It deserves 4 stars, except for the typesetting, which is awful. The letters are closer to each other vertically than horizontally. This is good for languages you read vertically, but English reads horizontally.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Will Make You Smile, April 23, 2002

This review is from: A Bite of Magic (Paperback)
The author of these short stories has a wonderful sense of whimsy. The main character in this appealing little book is a charming elderly widow whose culinary concoctions are imbued with magic. Men fall in love with her, remarkable things happen in civic association and library committee meetings, etc. Recipes are included so that the reader might try to work the same kind of magic in his or her own kitchen. I loved it!
