4.0 out of 5 stars Scoots along between three and four stars, July 24, 2007

This review is from: Bite Your Tongue (Audio CD)
OK, let's get this out of the way. Sex Slaves play anarcho-sleaze punk. They are obviously in love with rock 'n' roll and learned to party, play and yes even dress by listening to Hanoi Rocks, early Motley Crue and every other sleaze rocker you ever heard of. Not out to change the world they come across like they'd rather drink the planet dry, one bar at a time.

My intro to this mob came from a freebie disc given away with Classic Rock magazine and the aforesaid disc was entitled Sons of Guns. Basically it was a collection of similarly minded bands who could all claim to have been influenced by the sleaze metal of early Guns 'n' Roses. Sex Slaves were well suited to such a compilation.

In summation this album has a number of very very catchy tunes and big chorus touches. Lead cut We're Going Out Tonight, Contagious and All Night Long are very indicative of the direction of the band and so would be good tracks to listen to a sample of or download (legally of course..). The sound of the album can further be illuminated by the names of the band members - Eric 13, Del Cheetah and J Bomb. And by the fact that they've covered the Iggy Pop/James Robert Williamson written number Search and Destroy. And they were supposed to be the support band for the aborted Vince Neil solo tour of Australia in 2006 (canned due to low ticket sales - natch). And if your still now sure what your getting here take a gander at the cover - two strippers kissing.

The musicianship isn't up to Yngwie Malmsteen or Joe Satriani standards but it is 100% appropriate for this style of product, good time music for pounding down the highway on the way to your next great gig. The vox have that youthful swagger alternating between utterly sincere yelling, anarcho punk sneer and the sort of 'I can't sing but darn it sounds good in the context of this band' bravado that carries so many frontmen through their careers. There is hardly a let up of the high energy attack and even when things do slow down and even when the album does segue into something less upfront like One More Night the delivery is still upbeat despite the somewhat plaintive tones of the track.

I actually picked up this 2nd hand obscenely cheaply and always associated it with brainless good times. And that's a compliment. Highly recommended if you can pick it up cheap cos it's a party album through and through.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome party rock album!, December 31, 2009
This review is from: Bite Your Tongue (Audio CD)
My man Paul already covered this album quite well with his review, but I figured I'd share my 2 cents worth anyway. I bought the Sex Slaves' 2008 debut Bite Your Tongue without hearing the music first. What can I say; it has one of the greatest album covers in the history of rock. Actually, it was recommended to me by Amazon based on previous purchases (Dirty Penny, Last Vegas, etc.), but come on, that cover...

Wait, where was I? Oh yeah, the music. This isn't really a throwback or nostalgia album, but it's obvious these guys loved the 80's party rock and punk scenes. Actually, if members of the Ramones, Rancid, Guns n' Roses and L.A. Guns got roaring drunk in a bar owned by Lemmy and grabbed whatever instruments were at hand, it would probably sound a lot like Bite Your Tongue. This is party rock in the best sense of the term. Album opener "We're Going Out Tonight" is a ridiculously catchy party anthem that would fit in just as well on a Rancid or Dropkick Murphys album as it would a Bang Tango release, and it totally sets the tone for the whole album. How can you not have a good time listening to rockin' songs like "All Night Long", "See You Naked" and of course "Thank God for Jack Daniels"? Throw in a cover of the Stooges classic "Search & Destroy" and this party is about ready to spill out into the streets.

Bite Your Tongue is just a great hard rocking, hard partying album that's a welcome break from what most mainstream rock radio stations play. If you're a fan of bands like Airbourne, Charm City Devils, Rockets to Ruin, you'll definitely want to add the Sex Slaves to your list of bands to look out for.

And hey, did I mention that cover?

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Entertaining, March 30, 2010

Punky rock with lyrics about sex, booze, and partying. All of these are relevent in our world today. You won't find much of a guitar solo here, but good vocals and a nice rhythm section provide non-stop energy. "Thank God For Jack Daniels" sold me, but there are many other good listens on this one. If you don't sing along with this one, then it's time to rollover beethoven.... Looking forward to catching them live.
