Book Description

2 and up
Meet one brainy spider who’s tired of getting washed off that famous waterspout—and decides to do something about it! Figuring there must be something she can buy that will do the trick, Itsy Bitsy heads to the nearest store. But with only a dead fly to trade with, it looks like she may be out of luck. However, being a spider who thinks outside the web, the spunky insect puts all eight legs to the task and comes up with a surprising way to survive any rainy day.

Inspired by her own daughter’s delight in the character and rhythms of the beloved song, Charise Mericle Harper created this affectionate homage for any child who’s ever sung along and wondered, “Hey, why does that spider keep falling off that spout?”

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2--A clever and amusing twist on the familiar rhyme. Itsy is creeping up the waterspout when it starts to pour, and, naturally, she gets soaked as she is washed to the ground. " 'Yikes,' said the spider./ 'I've got to use my brain/And figure out a way/To not get wet again.'" She crawls to the corner store, hoping to trade a dead fly for a cover to keep her dry. When the clerk, a dog, turns her down, Itsy offers another suggestion: "I can catch your fleas and/Help you with the store." A deal is struck and the spider earns enough money for a brightly striped umbrella. Harper uses the first two lines of the traditional nursery rhyme and then switches to her own words, keeping the meter consistent throughout. The acrylic-and-pencil illustrations are quirky, and the backgrounds, as well as the characters, are decorated with small geometric patterns that give depth to the artwork. Itsy has big buggy eyes, full red lips, and a little purse with polka dots. This book will make a fun read-aloud for children familiar with the original verse.--Wendy Woodfill, Hennepin County Library, Minnetonka, MN

More About the Author

Here are some things I have learned:

Using comics can be a good way to tell a story.
Fed Ex envelopes are handy for filing stuff.
Revising is surprisingly satisfying, but not always easy.
Some things are fun to look at, but not fun to own.
A day can be long.
A day can be short.
And sometimes one little thing can change a whole day. Like the time I got the good parking spot outside Trader Joes - good day!

Best wishes to you, for a good one!

This review is from: Itsy Bitsy, the Smart Spider (Hardcover)
My two year old daughter loves this book! It continues the story of the itsy bitsy spider after she gets washed out of the water spout: "The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the water spout. Down came the rain and washed the spider out. 'Yikes,' said the spider, 'I've got to use my brain and figure out a way to not get wet again.'" She gets a job to earn money and eventually is able to afford an umbrella to protect her from the rain. The book continues in the same rhyme format as the original verse. It is a very clever story and teaches kids to think about how they can solve their problems. The illustrations are colorful and cute. I would definitely recommend this book.

Not only is this a charming tale of the modern day "you go girl" mentality, but it has great staying power with my 2 1/2 year old son, who now likes to sing the verses in the car (and we see who remembers them first!) We've read this book almost every night for over a year...and im not tired of it yet!

Finally, someone's made the Itsy Bitsy Spider . . . SMART! A modern take on the Itsy Bitsy Spider, "Itsy" doesn't just keep falling down the spout, she DOES something about it. Go Itsy! Harper does it again with fantastic colors and creative text. We read the book and sing it depending on the mood. There's nothing Bitsy, about this Itsy! Go Itsy!
