Bitten by Deceit was a short and sweet tale that packed a hefty punch. After being bitten by her alpha whose bite caused madness and mindless devotion, Emma is running for her life, trying to find Kyle Benton -- the only man she knows could help her. A year earlier, Kyle was ejected from the pack after being defeated in a dominance challenge for the alpha position by the same alpha who is currently stalking Emma. Kyle is still very bitter at his pack for being kicked out and at Emma, who as the love of his life, refused to leave the pack with him. But, Emma is now seeking Kyle out for his strength to defeat the current alpha. When Kyle encounters Emma after a year, his anger towards her boils and he lets her know exactly how he feels about her and then promptly dismisses her without a backwards glance. Sadly, Emma has run out of time! The poison is coursing through her system and the crazed alpha is hot on her heels. Although he is still very angry, Kyle relents and offers to help Emma, albeit reluctantly. As Kyle and Emma prepare to make their last stand against the alpha and his posse of infected wolves they discover the unexpected... hope, strengthened by their enduring love for each other.

Bitten by Deceit is my foray into Ms. Madison's universe and I really enjoyed this shifter tale. The story moved at a fast but engaging pace. The characters were interesting although a bit shallow because of the novella length of the story which left me with questions that I would have enjoyed knowing the answers to. Why did the pack alpha seek the dark magic which allowed him infect other wolves? Why was he so intent on Kyle and Emma? What happened after the smoke cleared? How did Emma's sister Meg deal with the situation?; Did the pack welcome Kyle back? See! Lots of questions!

I was given a copy of this novella in exchange for my honest review.

This is a short novella, but that does not mean that it is short in action, romance, and trouble. As a matter of fact, this novella was full of romance and action. Also, the author did a good job explaining the previously established relationship between Emma and Kyle. It cannot be an easy thing to do, putting enough background to make the story plausible into a novella. I do not want to go too into detail about the story itself, since it is not a full novel, but I was fully entertained by this story. You can read it in one sitting without being interrupted, and still get that satisfaction you feel from finishing a longer story. I am rather hoping the author will make this into another series. This feels like I need more stories to get to know the other characters that were introduced so briefly into the story. :) Also, I thought the story-line itself was pretty awesome. I mean, the rabid pack members kind of reminded me of zombies.. :D I don't know about you, but to me that's pretty freaking awesome.

all in all: short read, but high in romance and action. 18+. and come on, werewolves? I love me some werewolves. Especially hot mechanic werewolves with rifles. hehe.

(Originally published on SnarkyMomReads - copy given to read in exchange for an HONEST review!)

"BITTEN BY DECEIT" by Shawntelle Madison is a 61 page short story priced at 99 cents. This is a fun, quick read - just perfect for sitting at soccer practice or in the carpool lane!

Emma is a wolf shifter who has been bitten by her Alpha, Liam. However, she hasn't been bitten in a "good" way -- Liam is in cahoots with a Black Witch in an effort to control his pack completely, and his bite initiates zombie-like actions. (Okay, really - how cool - way to get two fun paranormal things together... shifters and zombies LOL!!) She goes searching for her one true love, Kyle - who was injured and then beaten in an alpha challenge against Liam, and thus banished from the pack. Liam is hot on her trail... and Kyle isn't sure he can forgive her for not leaving the pack with him.

This is a story of.... ZOMBIE SHIFTERS!... (I just like to say that) and redeeming love. Like I said - quick read, fun read, sexy read... and a great price. Check it out! And here's some advance notice -- as a member of Shawntelle's Street Team, I have seen the smokin' hot cover of the next story in the Hadley Werewolves series - "Bitten By Treachery"!

This novella turned out to be a really hard one for me to rate. While the writing voice in this story was very strong. Nothing about the characters reached out to me and pulled me in. For the most part I search for unique and sexy shifter stories. When I saw one that looked unique I grabbed up this one.

However, there was something about it that just didn't quite reach out to me as a reader. The characters, although flushed out and sound in their personalities and reasoning didn't make me care for them. Nothing about Emma really made me go, "Oh, I get her." Mostly I got a whole lot of disloyalty to someone that was supposed to be her mate all for the sake of not making waves.

The mild background peaks we have into the couple sort of gives us an idea that they were doing ok. Then this Liam dude comes out of the wood work to challenge him.

See, this my issue with most werewolf books. They make werewolves look like white trash and easy to turn on each other. The rest of the pack easily brainwashed by said disloyal member. I don't like that. I believe based on research done by wolves in the wild that this whole white trash concept flies in the face of how half human breeds would act.

Yes, I just got discovery channel on you all.

Then we are brought to the romance.

I get this is novella.

Its hard to really sell a romance in 20k words. However, if you don't think you can sell it, then write a full length. Because you didn't sell this 'five seconds ago I hate you, now I'm humping you while you are dying of the werewolf equivalent to rabies.' Erm--nah that doesn't work.

I wasn't even quivering in lust at any of the sex scenes I just kinda read through it and went, "Oh, they humped, good for them.
