Fun!,

This review is from: Bitten (DVD)
Bitten (Harvey Glazer, 2008)Glazer, producer of one of my favorite movies of 2007 (The Mad), takes the director's chair here for Bitten, a similar comedy/horror mix with a similar surprisingly-famous cast and a similarly (though not as sharp) amusing script from Tim McGregor and Tyler Levine, who previously collaborated on UKM: Ultimate Killing Machine, which I haven't yet seen. After this, though, I'm tempted to track it down. Jack (Kevin Smith regular Jason Mewes, who plays Jay in the Jay and Silent Bob movies), a lovelorn EMT, and his partner Roger (The Boondock Saints' Richard Fitzpatrick), are going about their daily lives on the graveyard shift. Jack is moaning about his ex-girlfriend Sherry (The Mad's Jordan Madley) and Roger is telling him it's time to get on with his life (in not so polite terms). So what do you think happens when Jack, on his way home from work, discovers a dying woman in an alley? EMT training and rebound attachment combine. It doesn't help matters that the woman, whose name is Danika (Erica Cox from American Pie Presents Beta House), is smokin' hot. Jack falls almost instantly, and Danika isn't averse, but there's one big problem: Danika, as it turns out, was attacked by a vampire. What do you do when you're an EMT and your new girlfriend has a taste for the red stuff? I have to say that my favorite thing about this movie is actually the interplay between Jack and Roger; it's what would have happened had Quentin Tarantino written the dialogue for Scorsese's Bringing Out the Dead: sharp, funny, and natural-sounding. Once the plot is kicked off, the dialogue is a bit less...well, that. But I really liked the pacing here, the acting is stellar for a movie of this caliber, the script is awesome, and Glazer is a competent director. I liked this one a bunch. *** ½

bloodsucking girlfriend . . .,
This review is from: Bitten (DVD)
In Bitten (2008), Jack (Jason Mewes) is a paramedic who finds an injured girl (Erica Cox) covered with blood in a trash dumpster, and takes her to his apartment for medical treatment. The girl named Danika has lost her memory. When Danika turns out to be a vampire in need of fresh blood, and sinks her fangs into Jack's ex- girlfriend Sherry (Jordan Madley), Jack is soon into something very deep and twisted. Tidying up the mess, Jack tries to find a way to satisfy his new girlfriend's needs, that doesn't involve homicide, but alas only blood from a live human will do. At work, Jack's partner Roger (Robert Fitzpatrick) notices changes in his friend, and becomes concerned when his behavior becomes more and more erratic. With bodies rising from the dead, and corpses pilling up in his apartment, Jack has doubts about the long term viability of this strange relationship.Often scantily dressed, Eric Cox makes a sexy vampire, as Danika spends most of her time in Jack's darkened apartment. Jason Mewes gives a good performance as the conflicted and gullible Jack. Robert Fitzpatrick steals most of the scenes he is in, with plenty of crude toilet humor, and cynical, cocksure advice. Bitten isn't particularly creative or scary, but spices things up with sex and black comedy, making entertaining viewing for fans of the popular vampire genre.

Falls short,
This review is from: Bitten (DVD)
A horror/comedy which tries to give itself deeper meaning by playing up the emotional factor. Mewes' acting isn't up to par for a proper film. The script draws out the characters in broad strokes, making them superficial. Erica Cox is hot enough but her short skirts can't save it. In the end, it felt more like a bunch of friends wanking off than someone trying to make a real movie. I understand this is supposed to be a fun flick, but it still isn't a good one. Watch "Let The Right One In" instead.
