Book Description

July 30, 1997
"A FAST-PACED TALE . . . Crisp prose, sharply drawn characters . . .  keep the reader involved until the climax."
--Publishers Weekly

Hotshot Chicago attorney Kate Millholland became a lawyer to avoid the gauntlet of parties that--in her parents' wealthy world--fill the gap between debutante and bride. To her surprise, she fell in love with the law.

Now, at the request of a colleague, Kate agrees to represent Superior Plating & Specialty Chemicals owned by the Cavanaughs, a family as corrosive as the chemicals they produce. She never expects to uncover the sordid, fatal secrets that bind the Cavanaughs together.

The least of which is murder. . . .

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Kate Millholland, Gini Hartzmark's High Society dropout turned hotshot Chicago lawyer, is an upscale version of Sara Paretsky's V. I. Warshawski--smart, tough, and endlessly resourceful, but with humanizing moments of weakness. In her third outing, Kate goes against her better judgement when a dying colleague asks her to help defend one of his clients. Millholland finds herself tangled in the smelly affairs of a rich, extremely nasty family who run a chemical company. Hartzmark's legal and business expertise provide a solid foundation for a finely tuned structure of suspense. Also available in paperback are Millholland's first two outings: Final Option and Principal Defense.

From Publishers Weekly

Latest installment in Kate Millholland series, in which the Chicago-based lawyer seeks to uncover a powerful tycoon's family secrets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gini Hartzmark does it again!, June 23, 1998

This review is from: Bitter Business (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been a fan of Gini Hartzmark's books since Principal Defense came out several years ago. I cannot narrow down one favorite thing about her writing. The stories are interesting, the mysteries intriguing, and the characters exciting yet realistic. When I read about one of Kate's adventures, I cannot put the book down until I've finished the last action-packed page. Then I can't wait to find out what's next. I'm looking forward to many more books by this talanted author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Waiting for the next one ..., April 29, 2002

This review is from: Bitter Business (Mass Market Paperback)
Since this is my first review, you have to figure I either hate this book or love this book. I LOVE GINI HARTZMARK MYSTERIES. I'm always looking for anything she's done, mostly because Kate Millholland maintains a kind of class while doing intelligent things--which let's me learn along. I also get to see lots of varieties on how people think. All told I enjoy these books so much I try to read them slowly so they last a long time. You also get the feel you're schmoozing with someone with integrity. As far as predictabilty goes, she makes enough unexpected twists to maintain interest. I look forward to more in this series.
