This is the third book by Dr. Carlson that I read. Every work of his that I end I reach the conclusion that it’s my favorite. Now, this is my new favorite novel of his. I read the book without reading the description, because I wanted to be surprised… and I was. The plot disentangled at the right pace, keeping me bonded to the book.
The history begins in Sicily, with a tragic event that’ll determine the fate of nearly all characters. This first tragic event will be determinant not just to Vincent’s formation, but to how he’s going to affect other people’s lives. I’ll try to keep it succinct in order not to spoil the plot.
Vincent is the eldest son of a sulfur miner from Sicily, whose mother died and his father remarried. He is miserable and he cares very much about his younger brother; They live in poverty and their stepmother is an unrepentant alcoholic. I find it interesting how there are so many characters with carefully constructed backgrounds, of which many break the social expectations most people have, for instance, the figure of the femme fatale is reinvented by Dr. Carlson.
The book is written in the omniscient third person, without flowery style. Even though the author’s lexical repertory is obviously extensive, he’s parsimonious not to overdo the usage of unnecessary adjectives or adverbs. It’s really a pleasure to read and to notice how the book is readily immersive, and still, the narrative grows after the first quarter, becoming more intricate. With the history secure on stable foundations, the narrative becomes even more fluid and the characteristic style of Dr.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read May 2, 2013
Format:Paperback
I have just finished this book. What a fun read. Dr. Carlson did a great job in developing his characters and leading the readers on a world adventure. I am a huge mystery reader. I have always been able to solve the mystery in the first few chapters. Not this time. I dare you to read the book and figure out the end before the last chapter!

I love the movement of the story. I didn't get bored because just when I thought I knew what was coming next, a surprise in the plot appeared. It's a great 'read' and kept me thinking about it even when I was supposed to be thinking of something.... I was fascinated by the medical- related details from the process in procedures to small things like the name of that pink soap surgeons use before surgury. It made everything about the story so interesting and pulled together nicely. Any time I had a few minutes to spare, I'd rush to read a few pages. It was fun.
