Each story builds on a single short vowel sound, giving beginning readers practice through the repetition of sounds and familiar words. Story lines are silly and inventive, and recall Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat for the building of rhythm and rhyming words. The books' animal characters and full-color illustrations will hold youngsters' attention. The read-along cassette features lively narration, using more than one voice to dramatize each story. This helpful series for emerging readers will engage their attention and be fun at the same time.

My son is a reluctant beginning reader, and he liked reading this book to me so much that he insisted on finishing it in one evening - which is quite rare for him. It's a good book for practicing words with "sh", as well as sw, sl, and some other double consonant sounds. My only complaint with this book is that some of the words are only nominally English words, and some of the word choices leave something to be desired. But I understand the attempt to use sounds that the author was trying to teach.
