Sean Penn likened Bardem's performance to Marlon Brando's performance in Last Tango in Paris. (Last Tango in Paris put me to sleep...so...I'm not sure what to think!)

Still, Alejandro González Iñárritu's film, Biutiful, is amazing--perhaps the best film I saw from 2010. And yes, I wept (but not like a grandmother). Now...on to the music:

Gustavo Santaolalla's music always moves me. And his collaborations with Iñárritu serve as the glue in their outstanding films. Santaolalla's score, as expected, is "biutiful" in every sense of the word, and luckily, this two-disc collection features a plethora of his music. This collection also features the other tracks that appear in the film. Disc one is a "soundtrack" and disc two is "bonus Santaolalla music." (I prefer the first disc, but the second disc is also wonderful (albeit a little more melancholy than the first disc).)

If you're a fan of Santaolalla's powerful, hypnotic music, don't hesitate to relive Uxbal's experiences through this wonderfully touching score/soundtrack. Life is truly "biutiful" when we fill it with beautiful music.

For those who have experience the miracle of the film BIUTIFUL this is a must: for those who haven't then this collection of excerpts form the film will offer a taste of the magic that Santaolalla brews. Some of the numbers here are written by others - such as the Café Tacvba's 'Como te extraño mi amor', 'Meditacion#9' by Sebastien Escofet, and of course the Adagio assai from Ravel's Piano Concerto in G and they serve as important asides form Santaolalla's idiosyncratic guitar music. One of the most fascinating tracks is the 'Maler' of Santaolalla as arranged by the brilliant Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov. It seems that in scoring a film Gustavo Santaolalla there are no shortcuts and no neglecting the influence of other composers that seem included to enhance Santaolalla's gift of creating an atmosphere. Highly recommended - before or after BIUTIFUL. Grady Harp, February 11

I purchased this disc after being immensely satisfied and impressed with Santaolalla's work on the soundtrack for the motion picture Babel. While this collection is far from as diversely enigmatic as that of Babel, the beauty here is exemplified in the simplicity of sounds and the stark clarity of the guitar.

The bonus disc provides a more melodious offering, yet continues in a characteristically sparse arrangement of melancholia. Anyone likely to find beauty in the simple and emotion in the sparse will certainly enjoy this collection by a masterful artist in his element.

Simply "biutiful".

This film is wonderfully good and insightful. It's very enlightening and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know what's happening in impoverished areas of the world. The music is beautiful and Bardem is a masterful actor. Not for the squeamish.

I saw the movie and loved it. For the first time I listened to the soundtrack and was instantly captured. What a fantastic work. I must find this on vinyl.
