1.0 out of 5 stars The Hipster Spies With His Little Eye Something That Begins With--STUDENTS BEWARE!, March 30, 2006
By
The Mystic Eye Of The Hipster (Murfreesboro, TN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bizarre Tales from World War II (Hardcover)
This author is notorious for errors, serious omissions, & questionable "sources" in his work.

This book is written like a shabby novel, not like a serious history book. The Author does not trouble to distinguish between fact & easily dismissed myths, nor even long exposed & discredited propaganda efforts.

If you are a student, DO NOT CITE THIS MAN'S BOOKS AS SOURCE MATERIAL IN A PAPER OR THESIS! It will quite likely result in a poor grade for your paper.

And remember--no tale becomes History merely because it makes for entertaining reading

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting take on little known W.W.II events, September 15, 2005
This review is from: Bizarre Tales from World War II (Hardcover)
I own and have read a number of Mr. Breuer's books relating to World War II, and have enjoyed them all. This volume is best read while having your computer on to search the web in order to verify some of his facts.
As a case in point, in one article he states there were over 20,000 U.S. deserters in Paris during the last year of the war. Though I felt that number was high, and unable to verify it, with a population of over one million residents in Paris at the time, I guess it could be possible.
I admit as I read some of the entries, I had a feeling Robert Ripley was standing over my shoulder saying "Believe it or not!"
But my main quibble was the fact he did not have enough items from the Pacific Theater. He had some, but most of the book relates to the European Theater. Other than that, I would give it five stars instead of four and recommend it.
The paperback version of this book is entitled: "The Spy who spent the war in bed" and is an exact duplicate. I found this out when I purchased both books seperately and after starting to read the second, discovered what I had accidentally done.

2.0 out of 5 stars kinda boring, October 7, 2011
By
Caraculiambro (La Mancha and environs) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bizarre Tales from World War II (Hardcover)
A collection of short pieces written by a man who knows his subject very well.

I thought I was going to be captivated. But most of the vignettes are kinda boring: so-and-so's opposite number in the Wehrmacht was actually his cousin, this guy and this other guy actually met at a dinner before becoming mortal enemies, if this or that operation had succeeded, it would have brought the war to a halt, etc.

It ended up being something of a chore to finish.
