Troyanos is a passionate, witty, and fascinating Carmen. I read in an interview once that she began learning her parts by reading the scripts as texts, without the music. This may explain (in part) how she finds so many nuances in the role. Solti is great. Domingo is not at his best in French (too nasal) and Van Dam is temperamentally not suited to Escamillo (although his voice is marvelous). But Te Kanawa is a lovely Michaela. Overall, an essential recording of Carmen. Troyanos's single best recording. RIP.

I received the CD fast and it's a beautiful soundtrack. The highlights are a great way to listen to the best stuff in a fairly short amount of time.

This review is subjective as I believe all are, especially in music. Bizet is great, the music is wonderful and the voices are good to hear. I am not, notr doo I pretend to be a music critic.
The other reviewers of this cd apparently had no problems and hopefully only mine is defective, but I feel compelled to warn prospective buyers my cd has more skips than I would like to see or hear. These are only in the first two selections. However, it is disappointing and detracts from the enjoyment of the recordings. My four stars are for the music, not the quality of recording.
