Editorial Reviews

Bizet's masterpiece opera Carmen tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a soldier who is seduced by the gypsy Carmen. The music of Carmen has been widely acclaimed and is most commonly sung in French. This recording of Carmen is sung completely in German. Christa Ludwig, who stars as Carmen, leads the all German cast including Rudolf Schock as the fiery Don José and macho-like Hermann Prey as Escamillo.

Bizet: Carmen (sung in German) is part of the Electrola Collection, a series that celebrates the historic record label, Electorla. Electrola was part of the EMI Classics unit in Germany best known for their rich catalogs, masterful artists and the iconic gramophone trademark.

This is an easy review. This is a wonderfully sung, played, recorded, conducted, and vocally acted CARMEN. The only possible drawback is if you can't handle it sung in German. Now for the review:
1) Christa Ludwig is simply a vocal knock out as Carmen. I will always love Price/RCA, Crespin/Erato, De Los Angelis/EMI, Callas/EMI and Swarthout/Met live Stevens/RCA or Sony-Met; however, Ludwig is their vocal equal. I saw her live and was impressed.
2) Rudolf Schock may be a little past his prime; however, he is right up there with Corelli, Vickers etc. Another plus for this wonderful recording.
3) Hermann Prey is a lyric swaggering Escamillo with plenty of power and, a surprize for me, an excellent low voice extension. I do slightly prefer Robert Merrill on RCA.
4) Melitta Muszely, a new name to me, is a lovely lyric Micaela who holds her head high even when compared to Freni/RCA and others.
5) All comprimario roles are in very good and able hands.
6) Horst Stein is a great conductor and is one of the most important assets of this wonderful wrong language recording. The Berliner Symphoniker is spectacular under his inspired leadership. Rhythmns, Tempi, Instrumental Color and Soli, Articulation, Phrasing and exquisite detail flow by in an alert and propulsive reading of this lovely score.
7) The Electrola sound is perfect. Stereo Imaging is clean and ideal as well as wonderfully balanced. In Fact, many of these Electrola wrong language complete Operas and Hi-Light recordings are in better sound on these German based Studio recordings than EMI Studio recordings of the same vintage.
8) So if opera sung in another language than its original language doesn't bother you; these Electrola recordings are generally well cast, sung, conducted and recorded.

This wrong language CARMEN (with Guiraud recitatives) is musically one of the best recordings of the much performed opera.
If a performance in German can't really be in the running for a 'strongest recommend', this one has so many strengths on musical and dramatic levels that it should be a supplement in your collection to one or more of the better French language performances.
Christa Ludwig is in top form vocally, and thoroughly committed to her character. Rudolph Schock is a bit past his prime, but also completely involved with Don Jose as a character. Melitta Muszely is an attractive Micaela, and you know that with Hermann Prey as Escamillo, you are going to get beautiful singing and attention to words.
Horst Stein leads a very exciting account of the score, and the Orchestra and Chorus of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin are among the finest in Europe.
The sound recording is excellent.
There are notes in German only.

As a native speaker, I found it very useful to start with a production where I could actually understand the text before moving on to the French original. This one is done beautifully and with an excellent cast. As for the original version - nobody can beat Maria Callas as Carmen!
