The words "Transcribed" and "Arranged" come to mind when trying to describe the Shchedrin suite from Bizet's Carmen. But a more apt word may be "Alchemy". He has taken Bizet's music and created a wondrous amalgam that is greater than the sum of its parts. Shchedrin scored the music for strings and percussion only. A lot of strings and a lot of percussion. I have to say that this version of Carmen is the definitive one and it will spoil you for any other version. I have never heard the Carmen Fate motif expressed more vividly than in this work. I bought this CD because my original vinyl LP (c. 1967) has accumulated a lot of pops, clicks, and noise from overuse on my lathe of a turntable.

This instrumental version of Bizet's score is highly listenable--fresh, lively, contemporary. It puts a new wrinkle in a familiar work. Recommended, but Rozhdestvensky's Bolshoi Theater Orch rendition originally issued on Angel vinyl is preferred--a CD reissue of that original LP would be even more highly welcomed.

Just a thrilling interpretation of an opera and musical standard. Hard to believe there are no wind instruments in some sections. A beautiful and bold blend of strings and percussion. Have purchased this for friends who have fallen in love with the recording.

I have heard several recordings of Bizet's Carmen, and I must say, this one is by far my favorite. In fact, this is the second time I have purchased this CD (the first one was stolen).
