Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2 Bizzy is a mouse-child who is attached to his patchwork quilt. One autumn day, while Bizzy and Uncle Ezra are on a harvesting expedition, the quilt is left behind and forgotten until bedtime. Bizzy's anguish begins to mount, a prelude to nights of troubled dreams. Uncle Ezra and Bizzy unskillfully begin the task of piecing together a new quilt. The orchard mice drop in to report that their own search has brought to light only odds and ends, including an old rag, faded and dirty, which turns out to be the remains of the quilt, very much the worse for being mislaid in a creek. The orchard mice help piece the bits of old quilt onto the new, and Bizzy's dreams are sweet again. Martin's lyrical text and Ormai's tiny-world illustrations perfectly complement each other. Poor Bizzy's misery is captured perfectly in the sad crumple of his nose and ears. The joy of reunion with the beloved, no matter what she looks like now, is shown by the bliss in Bizzy's face, relief in Uncle Ezra's, and good fellowship in the orchard mice. Nor does Bizzy forget his debt to the orchard mice. How delightfully complete is this little tale. Despair and then renewed hope: what more can literature offer? Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, McKinney, Tex.
