Could be more durable but is a good value,

This review is from: Black & Decker Extra-Tall Can Opener (Kitchen)
I purchased this can opener about a year ago. The unit is capable of opening cans up to 7 inches tall without having to lift the unit. The base is stable and can support heavier cans without hand support. The unit automatically shuts off after the can is open. The handiest feature is the fact that you can remove the cutting blade and pop it into the dishwasher for easy cleaning. I was not impressed with the knife sharpener on the back of the unit as it didn't sharpen my knives well enough (ended up investing in a Chef's Choice stand-alone sharpener instead and am glad I did). Also the durability of the unit is limited. After a year, my unit has a loud grinding sound and is very slow to complete the cut of the can. Sounds like a gear is stripped inside. This damage may have been caused by more than average use of the opener over the past year. Nevertheless, this is considered a good value in my book.

Pass it up!,

I thought this would be a great can opener. Not so. It works with extra tall cans, and that's about it. Don't even think about trying to open small cans, such as a 6 oz. or so. It just will not work. This can opener does indeed shred labels and is most difficult to line up with the place where it's supposed to lock on to the lid. Since I bought this can opener, it has taken me an average of about three attempts to open any given can. In short, I'm taking this thing back. My manual can opener works better than this!

Easy to clean the blade, but shreds the labels,

I like the fact that you can remove the blade to clean it easily. The blade has been sharp enough to open every can, but it's sometimes difficult to get the blade to lock onto the can. It consistently shreds the labels. So I usually remove the label to prevent the paper mess. The little chore of removing each can's label negates the time saving benefit of an electric can opener.

Great product!,

After reading the other reviews, I felt compelled to write one myself. I have had this can opener for 1 1/2 years and it has worked without fail and is showing no signs of wearing down. I cook using canned items several times each week, so this is no unused item. The trick is to line up the can's edge under the blade, then adjust the can so that the lid-holding magnet is centered on the lid. Once that magnet is smack in the middle of the lid, the can opener works like a charm. Otherwise it doesn't engage right. I don't consider this a design flaw, just the right way to use the machine. The height of the opener is an added bonus so that family-sized cans are no extra chore. Also I have opened the tiny cans of sliced mushrooms or diced green chiles with this same can opener and had no trouble. I highly recommend this product.

Pretty good,

I have never been able to use automatic can openers, so at my house it's operator error if the thing doesn't work the first time. I like that it's tall. The lids always stay on the can opener after I have removed them. It stores very easily and cleans up pretty nicely. It does shred the wrapping on the can, but I usually throw mine away. Never had a problem with the paper going in the food. (?see comment below?) Overall, I think it's a great buy. Very sleak, I sure don't mind leaving it on countertop!

Cheap, Tall, Somewhat Handy,

This can opener is good, and definately good for big cans. All you do is secure the can in place, and press the button. It continues and stops automatically. And after it's done, it stays on and doesn't fall off. And you can take off the cutting-thingy and put it in the dishwasher or clean it some other way. There are two problems, though. One is that is cuts a small amount of the paper on the top of the can in the process, so you have to be careful with that. And the knife sharpener sucks. But if you want a good can opener that's very cheap and sharp-looking, get this.

It works, but it has some problems!,

I bought one of these can openers in 2002, and it's still working. My best guess is that I've opened more than 1000 cans with it -- maybe 2000. But it has problems. First, as several people have noted, it chews up the paper labels on the outside of cans that have them. Lining up the blade with the top of the can is not always easy. And when I use it to open cans that are filled with liquid all the way to the top, a bit of the liquid always spills out during the opening process. So, overall, I'd rate this B&D can opener as follows: DURABILITY: VERY GOOD, EFFECTIVENESS: GOOD, CONVENIENCE: FAIR, TIDINESS OF OPERATION: POOR. I'll buy a different model next time.

Not the best,

I trust the Black & Decker name but must say that this particular product is a disappointment. It isn't user friendly. It takes several attempts to get the can hooked and opened and by that time it has shredded the paper label in which some pieces always end up in my food. My advice for you would be to make sure can is cleaned before opening so you don't have a problem if any paper falls back into the can.

Tired of shredded labels,

The can opener shreds the labels off of the tops of the cans. I even get small pieces of metal on my counter top when I use this. Every time I open a can I end up having to fish out little pieces of paper from our food. Other than these two problems, it has opened everything. It is easy to clean as well. I am in the market for a new opener.

Your dog will go hungry.....,

This can opener is not easy to use -- difficult to line up the can under the opener blade -- and it absolutely would not open 22oz. cans of dog food (which I open several of daily) no matter what I tried. It did shred the label of the cans that I was able to open with it. The company help line was unable to give me any suggestions that worked. I wrote an online inquiry at Black & Decker's website, and a rep called me promptly. According to the company, there are subtle differences in some can tops & this opener doesn't handle them all. They suggest that their model EC1200 should be able to open the dog food cans. I haven't tried that model as yet.
