Don't Listen; Read,
This review is from: I Am the New Black [Abridged 4-CD Set] (AUDIO CD/AUDIO BOOK)2
I like Tracy Morgan - his appearances on the Howard Stern radio show on Sirius constitute some of the funniest material I've heard in a long time; however, the man should not have done the audio recording of his book. There were times when it sounded like he was going off script and rambling. The problem here is that his 'offbook' remarks tend to sound repetitive and "spoken before they're thought out". I don't know if his book reads like this, but there were some pauses and 'um and uh's" that I had to do some skips on the recording just to get to the point of what he was trying to convey. Apart from 30 Rock and SNL, I don't know this man, and why he holds himself in such high regards is beyond me. He became a celebrity but no more or less of one than other comedians who have appeared on television. There is no catch to this book. I've heard the "rags-to-riches-to-down-times-to-up-times" story so many times by other celebrities, and there just doesn't seem to be anything fresh here. I liked his memories of his father and his comments that the story of his life happened years before his birth, but this book is short on funny, interesting moments and heavy on the "I deserve this success, Jesus complex" that he and other celebrity bios tend to have. He speaks about how he should be in a starring vehicle when it comes to movies, which makes me think he wrote this book long before that bomb he did with Bruce Willis. Enjoy your fame, Tracy. I have a feeling when 30 Rock goes to the Nick at Nite graveyard, your career will depend on the residual checks you get because a Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, you ain't.
