The final stop in the Black Adder epic is this fourth series, set on the western front in 1917, deep into World War I. (Fans know there is also a Victorian-era Black Adder Christmas special that precedes this.) This time, Captain Edmund Blackadder, the most cynical, selfish, and sour of them all, is surrounded by fools and half-wits as he tries to negotiate survival. The major male players from the preceding series are all in this one, creating one of the strongest concentrations of British comic talent in one place since Monty Python. This collection includes "Captain Cook," in which Edmund becomes the official "war artist"; plus "Corporal Punishment," concerning Edmund's breaching of regulations via cannibalism; and "Major Star," in which the men on the front have to confront fallout from the Russian Revolution. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Adder Ever., November 3, 1999
This review is from: Black Adder Goes Forth: Part I (VHS Tape)
The complete tone of this series of Black Adder is different from the others. No longer does Atkinson see the need for him to drive the plot, this allows the other players to shine as well as the wonderfully written scripts to shine through. Although he is still the fulcrum that the stories hinge upon.

This video gives the veiwer as taste to what is going to be happening in the end of the show. The remergence of "Bob" as a young Tommy is equally remarkable, and special.

This video is a must see for all those who thought that Rowan Atkinson was only a physical Comedian, as well as all true black adder fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Adder Rules!, October 24, 1999
This review is from: Black Adder Goes Forth: Part I (VHS Tape)
Inspired stuff. I especially love the bit with Captain Black Adder trying to argue against going into no-man's land at night to paint pictures of the Germans: "You see Sir, my medium is light; it'll be pitched black. I won't see a thing." "You're right. That IS a problem. I know! We'll send up a couple of flares. You'll be lit up like a Christmas tree!"

Glad I asked.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, September 3, 2000
By A Customer
this is one of the most inetelligent and entertaining comedy series i have experienced set in the trenches of WW1. blackadder and his men are stuck at the front lines waiting for orders to advance. these characters are an absolute pleasure to get to know, from georges gungho willingness to fight, to blackadders schemes not to. for anyone that enjoys light, adult humor in a war setting, this is a must see.
