5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Adder Ever., November 3, 1999
This review is from: Black Adder Goes Forth: Part I (VHS Tape)
The complete tone of this series of Black Adder is different from the others. No longer does Atkinson see the need for him to drive the plot, this allows the other players to shine as well as the wonderfully written scripts to shine through. Although he is still the fulcrum that the stories hinge upon.

This video gives the veiwer as taste to what is going to be happening in the end of the show. The remergence of "Bob" as a young Tommy is equally remarkable, and special.

This video is a must see for all those who thought that Rowan Atkinson was only a physical Comedian, as well as all true black adder fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Adder Rules!, October 24, 1999
This review is from: Black Adder Goes Forth: Part I (VHS Tape)
Inspired stuff. I especially love the bit with Captain Black Adder trying to argue against going into no-man's land at night to paint pictures of the Germans: "You see Sir, my medium is light; it'll be pitched black. I won't see a thing." "You're right. That IS a problem. I know! We'll send up a couple of flares. You'll be lit up like a Christmas tree!"

Glad I asked.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, September 3, 2000

this is one of the most inetelligent and entertaining comedy series i have experienced set in the trenches of WW1. blackadder and his men are stuck at the front lines waiting for orders to advance. these characters are an absolute pleasure to get to know, from georges gungho willingness to fight, to blackadders schemes not to. for anyone that enjoys light, adult humor in a war setting, this is a must see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, August 12, 2004

We pulled these out again recently, and I don't remember enjoying them as much before. Previously season 2 had been my favorite, but seeing these again after a few years has increased my appreciation. Highly recommended, but I would still suggest that new Black Adder viewers start with season 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different kind of Blackadder, here, though no worse for it, December 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Black Adder Goes Forth: Part I (VHS Tape)
Goes Forth was received somewhat cooly when it came out, as I remember. It lacked the carefree humour that we had associated with its predecessors. But perhaps we just knew that the characters that were being lampooned in this last series were all too real. It was somehow less funny, because we knew that there were Melchetts aplenty dictating matters from behind the lines. The difference being that these real-life Melchetts were not in the least funny: They were dinosaurs who disregarded their obligation to oversee the efficiency of their activities in the arena of the First World War and displayed a flagrant lack of interest in the tactical wisdom of their approach to war, generally.

But Goes Forth, holds something for the viewer in spite, or perhaps because, of this. It rates perfect marks for me because the futility and stupidity of this period in our history is made digestible, and yet the lesson is there to be absorbed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touches at the cynical heart of even the most upbeat!, November 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Black Adder Goes Forth: Part I (VHS Tape)
Rowan Atkinson, recently of Mr. Bean fame in his classic work made for the British audience. The most cynical of characters he portrays Captain Blackadder of the British Infantry during the First World War. Captain Blackadder's bid to remain sane in an insane world is undermined by the blithering idiot (Boldrick) and the eternally upbeat Lieutenant George whose patriotism is matched only by the most blind. The combination of the battlefield and the bid to relieve himself of the problems found within are enough to have even the most sour laughing till midnight.
