5.0 out of 5 stars Black Afrodite - A Classic October 8, 2013

I had never heard of Black Afrodite, not "AJITA WILSON". I was impressed with the story AND the premise. A black female sex-oriented super agent. Then, when I learned that SHE used to be a guy, I spent the whole movie trying to detect what I couldn't see. Shucks, AJITA looked good! I couldn't tell she was a transsexual. After the movie, I called my girlfriend and said I was comin' over!

3.0 out of 5 stars Bang. Bang. Kiss. Kiss. Kill. Kill. October 10, 2009

All right. So it didn't win the Academy award. 1970's macho black-sexploitation is in full swing in the new, uncut DVD transfer of 1977's "Black Aphrodite".The opening sequence is a few menacing thugs crossing Broadway, near Times Square, Manhattan, in 1977. The action shifts to a jungle encampment, where rival guerrilla gangs blast away, fighting over stolen guns, contraband, and frankly, who knows what. The rest of the 93 minutes of "Black Aphrodite" is shot in Greece, where the rival gangs torture, murder, and rape their way into oblivion. "Black Aphrodite" is never boring, since the banal violence is always interrupted by steamy sex scenes, usually featuring Ajita Wilson, as Tamara; also known as "Number One". Wilson is a husky, black amazon, in a blue-red dress, which falls to the floor with the release of just one shoulder strap. Then comes a grinding, erotic exercise, usually with both members naked. "Black Aphrodite" is aided by on-location photography at the Acropolis, Athens, and around the Greek Islands. What doesn't work is the grainy transfer, and the sloppy English dubbing of dialogue, gunfire, and, I'm thinking, maybe a musical sound-track. Two other young female actresses are slapped, beaten, and variously mauled. One is tied to a pole and murdered. The other is attacked by a hairy brute on the beach. Ajita Wilson as Tamara emerges un-hurt. In the finale, she is robed in a brown cheetah suit, bare legs, and high, black-leather boots. Tamara straps on a big, bad 12-gauge shotgun, and blasts away at her enemies. Banned in Finland, "Black Aphrodite" was produced for the drive-in theaters, and direct-to-video markets, neither of which exist today. But in the leisure-driven culture of 2009, this little gem is an easy return to the blissful, promiscuous 1970's of 30 years ago. Read more ›
