Black Alice,
By
This review is from: Black Alice (Mass Market Paperback)
Black Alice by Thom Demijohn was a real intense, somewhat tongue in cheek novel which i have read twice. it was pretty profound for an easy read. The protagonist is a little white girl, who loves her black governess and actually wants to be black (her own parents are highly disfunctional). This occurs through a chain of events involving crime, intrigue and psychodrama. Along the way the reality of what it means to be a black child and invisible in white America at that time becomes clear to the reader. It is unpredictable and humorous, and most important, ends well on a just note.

Fun,
This review is from: Black Alice (Hardcover)
This work is a fictional, sociological escapade from the Sixties. Not quite as much fun as Lewis Carroll's work (because more complex and more intelligent), this novel nonetheless is satiric while showing up the plight of black people in a white-dominated world as a little girl falls down the rabbit hole to become an invisible black little girl. The plot is fast-paced and there are many twists and turns. A memorable work -- with a happy ending.
