Wonderful self-affirming book for children!,
By Anonymous (Los Angeles, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black All Around! (School & Library Binding)
This beautifully illustrated book celebrates the color black and, in a world where all things white are placed on a pedestal, has the indirect effect of encouraging African-American children to embrace who they are and how they look. Replaces negative connotations associated with black, e.g. "blackmail", "black market", and focuses on all of the good things in our world that are black. Our children, ages 3 and 5, list this as one of their favorites. Read and enjoy!

Finally!,

This review is from: Black All Around! (School & Library Binding)
As a mother of two, young African American daughters who live in a racially diverse community, it was delightful to read this book that celebrates the great things about the color black. My daughters resonated with the images of things and people that look and sound like them. Would love to see more of these types of books for this age group.

All about the color black,
By
This review is from: Black All Around! (School & Library Binding)
A young girl explores all the beautiful things that are black, from "the inside of a pocket where surprises hide" to "Momma's cheek." This book is about the color black, but it's also about good self image. The social message it's trying to give is not heavy-handed and the illustrations are fanciful and fun.

Photography and Content,

4/21/11 the photography and its content were a little different than expected based on the book's title..the analogies for 'black' has been better depicted in other books to be read to children, especially to be read to children of the black race.

Lively, gorgeous painting,
This review is from: Black All Around (Paperback)
I just love this picture book--the art swirls, spins, and dances, and it makes you want to get up and dance along with it. It's such a brilliant idea for a book: all the beautiful things in our world that are black. The text and images are lyrical, and I've lingered long and happily over each page with my young "readers," talking about all the wonderful things we see in the pictures.
Honestly, I don't know why this book isn't a classic. More people should know about it! |
