This musical soundtrack is my favorite! It has a diverse offering of artists who range in vocals from a very robust and alluring tenor to enchanting soprano. The types of songs go from fun & upbeat to "somebody-please-get-me-a-tissue" blues. These selections will make you envision whatever scene/theme that is being performed and will force you to crawl into the number and savor/enjoy the fun or the blues of it.
I love it!! I believe you will, too.

I first saw BLACK AND BLUE in 1993, not on Broadway, but on PBS' "Great Performances," where there was a special made-for-TV production of it. It was very entertaining, and I have it on an old video tape somewhere (unfortunately, it was never released commercially on VHS or DVD). I don't know why I waited so long to purchase the original-cast CD, which is long out of print, but I found one at a very low price from an Amazon Merchant.

The CD is a wonderful collection of old-time blues and jazz standards, beautifully sung by veterans Carrie Smith, Linda Hopkins, and Ruth Brown. Three tracks offer samples of tap-dancing - Jimmy Slyde's solo on Benny Goodman's "Stompin' At The Savoy," and brief group routines on "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," and the closing title track. Many young performers got their Broadway start here, including the amazing Savion Glover (though he is not on this soundtrack or in the PBS production).

There was one sound drop-out on "I Want A Big Butter And Egg Man," but that was not uncommon on CDs of 1989 vintage (the format had only been in existence for six or seven years). I don't know if that defect is in any other copies, but as it is no longer in print, there is nothing that I can do. I still enjoyed the show, though.

If you don't overpay for it, this CD is worth finding. I hope that the PBS production will be available on DVD someday (if PBS doesn't want to do it, they could license it to Kultur Video, Shout Factory, or some other reissue label).
