Dark, simple, appealing to the soul,
By Cory J Dickens (Klamath Falls, OR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black Aria (Audio CD)
First off, when this came out, it was my favorite cd to spin when I was, well, when I was doing things my parents and girlfriend's parents were hoping we weren't doing. It's not a rock album, it's like nothing Glenn Dazig has ever done. It's a simple work of dark music. The songs, titled after various parts of the Angel war for Heaven and Lucifer's decent, each carry a weight, a seriousness, with them. Combined with a haunting choir and the howl of a wolf, classical instruments bring Glenn's work alive like nothing ever has before. The only complaint I could muster up, so I sound like I'm trying to suck up too much, is that it is simple. No complex shifts in tone or structure, the songs can bleed and make the disc somewhat hard to listen to if you're driving. That said, it's a great cd if you're out to discover Glenn's other talents, broaden your horizons from gothic metal to something more classical, or just need something to inspire your nightmares. It's a must have.

Black Aria,

Danzig himself says that many fans will find it strange that he decided to make this album and writes about this in the book-let. This sounds nothing like the music Danzig has done in the past and he shows that he is more then just a singer for a rock band. The compositions all can be said to be minimalistic and sound like a mix between delerium and instrumental synth music a la vangelis or Jarré. Danzig is not as tallented as these fellows but still has created a nice instrumental album with some nice tracks.

A Little Something Different From Danzig,
By
This review is from: Black Aria (Audio CD)
Well, I purchased this CD when it was originally released, and I've enjoyed it from time to time. It's certainly not standard Danzig fare, and it's not bad for what it is. It's rather simplistic and repetitive, though the music is definitely beautiful and haunting. One of the main problems with this album is that it's something like 20 something minutes long. The moment one starts to really get into it, it's over. While it's nowhere near Glenn at his finest, it's definitely worth adding to the collection.

Brilliant work, unforgettable,

I have one of the originals of this, not the re-release, and it it quite possibly the most outstanding CD in my Metal collection, cuz it's not really metal. I think this album is shear proof of how much talent actually exists in the percieved "screaming talentless hateful angry stereotype etc" world of Heavy Metal. Glenn Danzig has real talent and this album showcases it in spades. From the opening track "Rebel Angels" to the strange "cwn anwnn," this is truely a powerful and remarkable CD. More Metal bands need to be this expressive instrumentally, music isn't just bass and vocals after all. (I think) It's not metal, but classical music written by Glenn Danzig...supposedly he was planning a sequel, I'd sell my soul for that.....

An interesting experiment,
This review is from: Black Aria (Audio CD)
I'm not a fan of heavy metal and so was a bit skeptical when a friend recommended this album to me ("Danzig? You know I hate heavy metal...").
When I was finally able to track it down I was glad I'd spent the time to do so. It's not "classical" per se (more synthesizer than much else and the repetitive themes do get trance-inducing, but maybe that was an intent...?), but it's good nonetheless. Great backdrop for rainy-night RPG sessions.

IF you are a Danzig fan: you probably won't like this.
IF you think all Danzig music is dull heavy metal: you might like this. IF you like contemporary classical music: you will like this. Suprised? So was I. I enjoy the Misfits, I even liked Samhain and some of Danzig's solo work. But I LOVE this disc. It is some of the evilest sounding music I have ever come across. Think of "Night on Bald Mountain". Yes, Danzig, never one to be hamstrung by what audiences or critics expect of him, has turned out a modern CLASSICAL masterpiece! Something of a cross between darkwave synth and a Wagnerian opera, this obscure gem is well worth owning. Would make a great soundtrack to your all night Dungeons & Dragons game, haunted house or Halloween party!

CLASSICAL REISSUE,
By ZOMBIEHORROR (O'fallon, Mo) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black Aria (Audio CD)
GLENN DANZIG stepped outside the bounds of the MISFITS punk, SAMHAINs goth & DANZIGs rock 'n' roll to create this classical vision of morbidity. BLACK ARIA may not be the greatest classical composition ever created but it is still a haunting concerto for GLENN to show off his talents. Long out of print GLENN has finally gotten a chance to re-release BLACK ARIA upon the world giving it a second chance of life. Long sought after by both DANZIG & classical music fans, you no longer have to hunt around to find this creepy-melancholy-somber creation from the mind of GLENN DANZIG! Believe the hype, this is well worth the 15 dollars, buy it now before it goes out of print again. How come no one ever puts BLACK ARIA under classical music section?

This is Not Typical Danzig - It's Better!,

Don't get me wrong, I love Danzig's 'typical' music, but this album is something completely different. When first listening to the music, you might have a hard time relating it to the Danzig we're all used to, but the more you listen, you realize that the same dark and gothic undertones are present even in this compilation of classical, instrumental music. I am a person who prefers to work by music, and I find this album to be ideal listening for any time that I really need to concentrate on what I'm doing. Again, it might not be the type of music you'd expect from Danzig, but I believe you'll be pleasantly surprised.

music that feeds the soul,
By
This review is from: Black Aria (Audio CD)
I purchased this cd awhile ago and am so pleased to have found it and happily added it to my classical collection. If Glenn Danzig releases a cd to accompany this one, then I will be a happy camper indeed. I have raved about this cd to all of my friends - not merely suggested, but DEMANDED that they buy it and let it enrich their homes as much as it has my own. Track #5, 'Dirge of Defeat' continues to move me to tears every time I listen to it; the music within this cd touches my soul more than any other that I've heard in years. I've enjoyed Glenn Danzig's musical offerings for years now, in the various guises that he's presented them in. In my opinion, his gifts as a composer are highly underrated; the fact that he's vocalist supreme has been apparent for years on end - now he's presented another side of himself - music that speaks volumes and continues to do in unique interpretations with each and every playing. BRAVO!

Good Music for Luvin',

This review is from: Black Aria (Audio CD)
Used to make love to this cd under a black light...ahhh memories. Not a bad disc actually, kind of nice when you're in a weird mood and don't know what to play. The fact that it is so simple as classical music goes makes it easy to listen to, there's not alot of crazy musical antics going on to distract you from the vibe.
