Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This book, part of a series on native North American animals, is a very good introduction to our smallest bear. The narrative starts with a chapter covering basic bear biology, comparing the black bear with its larger cousins and providing an introduction to the physical characteristics of the bear. The remaining four chapters follow the bears' lives through the four seasons, showing the challenges that each season presents. The importance of gaining weight in preparation for winter and hibernation, and how this affects the bears' activities, is stressed in the sections on the other three seasons. The author has had much experience with black bears, and his tales of encounters with bears enliven the text. The inherent shyness of this bear has allowed it to survive in a human-altered world and allowed it to live near people and their pets without challenging them. This well-written book about our most numerous bear, the one most people have a chance of seeing, is therefore highly recommended. Nancy Bent

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Bear Country, December 16, 1999
This review is from: Black Bear Country (Hardcover)
This study of the black bears of Minnesota is well researched and well written. The photography is all color and mostly full page spreads. The photos alone are well worth the cost of the book. Contains photos of Kermode, blue, and cinnamon "phase" black bears. A must for all bear lovers!

This book provides a great wealth of knowledge on the black bear and does so in a very relaxed style. The joy experienced in reading this book was only surpassed by the joy in the stunning photography which is present through out. A wonderful work but next to impossible to find.
