Editorial Reviews

Review

"I give this book a 4 paws rating (excellent). It is well written and the subject is thoroughly covered. If I had to only own one book on bear hunting, this would be it." Don Muggli, Bear Hunting Magazine

From the Author

This is the third book I've written about black bear hunting and, by far, the most comprehensive. You will learn more about black bears and how to hunt them in this book's 384 pages than any other book on the subject. More About the Author

Richard P. Smith is an award winning outdoor writer and photographer living in the Upper Peninsula (U.P.) of Michigan who has been hunting whitetail deer and black bear for almost 50 years. The author/photographer is a recognized expert on whitetail deer and black bear behavior and biology as well as hunting these popular big game animals. He has interviewed the top bear biologists in the country and accompanied them in the field on their research. A number of the books he's written and DVDs he's produced have been about deer and black bear.

Over the past year, Smith has spent countless hours filming whitetail deer behavior with a high definition video camera and has captured some unique clips of deer eating mushrooms, a doe nursing her fawn, velvet shedding, bucks fighting, buck and doe breeding activity, the reaction of a buck losing his antlers and much, much more.

One of his more prestigious honors was receipt of the coveted Ben East Prize for 1997 from the Michigan United Conservation Clubs for conservation journalism about bear management. He also received the Outdoor Journalist of the Year Award from the Flint, Michigan Chapter of Safari Club International the same year.

Smith is a nationally recognized writer, photographer and speaker who has written 24 books and thousands of magazine articles, specializing in all types of wildlife, but especially whitetail deer and black bear. He contributes regularly to Michigan Sportsman Magazine, Woods-N-Water News and Michigan Outdoor News. He's a field editor for Bear Hunters Online, Bear Hunting Magazine and Michigan Hooks & Bullets. His writing and photography appear regularly in national magazines including Deer & Deer Hunting, Buckmasters, North American Whitetail, North American Hunter, Outdoor Life, Bowhunter and National Wildlife.

During recent years, the videographer has completed two popular DVDs. One is titled Field Judging Black Bears, a subject he's an expert on, and the second is Walking With Whitetails, both of which are available from Amazon.

During the spring of 2002, Richard bagged a huge black bear in Saskatchewan with a .45 caliber Knight Super Disc Muzzleloader that is the second highest scoring black bear in national muzzleloading records maintained by the Longhunter Society. The bruin's skull officially measures 21 14/16, also qualifying for a spot in Boone and Crockett Records. He was hunting out of Lone Wolf Camp operated by Brian and Shelly MacDonald when he got the trophy bear. A full mount of the animal is on display at a Cabela's Store in Hamburg, Pennsylvania that opened in 2003.

Richard's biggest whitetail bucks have been bagged in Saskatchewan, too, while hunting with Proudfoot Creek Outfitters. He shot a 13-point nontypical that had a gross score of 171 3/8 while hunting out of that camp during the fall of 2010.

He is only the second person in Michigan to collect a CBM Grand Slam. To complete such a feat, a hunter must shoot deer, bear, elk and turkey that qualify for listing in state records maintained by Commemorative Bucks of Michigan (CBM). It took Smith a lifetime of hunting in the state to achieve the goal. His slam was completed on November 3, 2000 when he bagged a turkey that qualified for CBM records.

The head mount of a snarling black bear that Smith shot with bow and arrow during 1974 plays a prominent role in the movie "Escanaba In Da Moonlight." The movie was filmed in and near Escanaba, Michigan during 2000 and began showing in Michigan theaters during February of 2001 and is now available on DVD and video. A screen-filling image of the bear head appears near the beginning of the movie as well as in a number of later scenes as it hangs on the hunting camp wall depicted in the film.

Black Bear Hunting is an exceptional book for the hunter. Unlike most hunting titles that quickly turn into a list of rifles, cartridges and retread ballistics table, Black Bear Hunting dedicates only 10 of its 370 pages to a the selection of appropriate weapon; smokeless and blackpowder rifles and handguns as well as archery equipment. The remainder of the book, in exceptional detail and clarity, covers animal behavior, habits and habitat, specific locations of dense population and high hunting success rates, and many very specific approaches to hunting. In the latter parts there is, again, very detailed information on everything from field dressing to preparing a trophy animal.

Excellent author; great writing style, easy to follow, clear and logical presentation of information. The production quality of the book is excellent, including the photography that appears throughout the book. I'm glad I bought the book.

I bought this book for tips on black bear hunting for the Northeast U.S. region. The book is well-made as others have stated, the paper is heavy and the photos are vivid color, which is nice to see in this day and age.
The book goes into a good deal of detail in explaining the habits and mindset of black bears. There were parts of the book that I did not find too useful such as the large sections on hunting over bait and with hounds, these practices are illegal in my state. I personally would have preferred to see more on spot & stalk, and hunting from a ground blind. The book also does not discuss preferred bullet construction for this potentially dangerous game species. Outside of these shortcomings it is an informative and helpful hunting book.

When I decided to learn about black bear hunting I purchased several current books on the subject including this one. Smith's book proved to be my favorite by far. Not only is Smith an experienced hunter, he is also a great writer. He writes clearly and concisely making "Black Bear Hunting" an easy and pleasurable read. The book is also beautifully published on high gloss paper with amazingly clear photographs compared to many other books on the subject. I learned tons about black bear hunting and consider this book my bible on the subject. My advice to you. Buy the book, you won't be disappointed.

Best black bear hunting book out there! Ihave a couple and this is great. great for anyone new to black bear hunting or hunting in general like me. Covers all aspects as to hunting, bear behavior, what to look for, signs, scat, where to shot with bow and arrow and tactics. Doesn't really cover calling for bears much and doesn't talk about skinning/ butchering or anything like however. Just gives you the steps to scout, track, find, and shoot a bear.
