Black Beech and Honeydew,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Black Beech & Honeydew (Paperback)
Not being a great fan of autobiography, I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. I should have known better. After all those years of enjoying her detective fiction, I should have known that anything she wrote would not disappoint. Other writers in the genre who wrote during the same time period -l934 to l982 - frequently seem dated; however, Miss Marsh does not. She is so literate, and she is funny and smart, and she had a truly interesting life and was from a truly interesting place, New Zealand's South Island. Though her London years added enormously to her story and her stories (particularly in providing backgrounds and settings for her novels), her heart belonged to New Zealand. And to the theatre (perhaps more theatre than I really wanted), but then without that particular love of her life, the book would not have been Ngaio Marsh writing about her life. The reader who has loved her books will certainly love this one.
