5.0 out of 5 stars Jim Kelly Sets the Stage for His Masterpiece "Hot Potato"
If you don't believe that Jim Kelly is a master actor, you will after seeing "Black Belt Jones". He manages to pull off the cheesiest movie ever made in two different genres: kung-fu and blaxploitation. This film is truly an artifact of the '70s (check out that theme music!) and is much more deserving of being revived in the '90s than disco. A real gem--where...

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful Transfer
I absolutely love this movie. I am one of the world's biggest Jim Kelly fans. BUT this DVD is an awful transfer. It is taken straight from a VHS and has not been digitally remastered. I absolutely love this movie. I am one of the world's biggest Jim Kelly fans. BUT this DVD is an awful transfer. It is taken straight from a VHS and has not been digitally remastered. At the beginning of my movie I have old VHS tracking noise, then the company gets the tracking right I guess by holding the tracking button on the VCR. There is only about two instances of this, but when one buys a DVD, he expects no VHS type tracking noise.

This film is truly an artifact of the '70s (check out that theme music!) and is much more deserving of being revived in the '90s than disco. A real gem--where else can you see a respected government agent who is also a master of karate fight drug dealers and the Mafia--wearing a leisure suit? My favourite part was when the evil gang leader and drug dealer (aren't all villians in early-'70s action movies evil drug lords or gang leaders?) is crushed in a garbage compressor--but still manages to scream his defiance AFTER the fact. A masterpiece.

This is a bootleg copy of the film released by some no-name distributor. Don't waste your time. Warner Bros. (the makers & owners of the film) have announced that they're releasing their entire archive - "Black Belt Jones" (HOPEFULLY!) included - to DVD over the next couple of years. Take a pass on this wackjob and wait for the authentic version.

BBJ is the best. Hands down. You can not be a martial arts fan and not LOVE this movie. Not only does it have Mr. Jim Kelly doing his work "every three seconds," but he's gonna "kick" some "g@#d@#n a$$" Poppa Byrd is "just lonely," because "what hoes you see me chasin, woman?" Just make sure you don't ask Sydney to clean any dishes because, "They're done." Charlene and Mary make phenomenal performances, only to be overshadowed by Pickles. I just wish I could "conclude a business meetin'" like Poppa Byrd does. When you watch this movie, make sure you're eatin your Granny Goose Potato Chips. When Toppy lets "the dogs loose," you'd better stand back... "Choose money or my honey?" Enough Said. Buy this movie. NOW. You need it. Jim Kelly for life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously, WB. Where's the DVD????????, November 26, 2004

Hands down a absolute classic of blaxploitation and martial arts. The opening credits alone is more fun than most of the movies out today.
However, I haven't seen this movie is over ten years, because I'm waiting for the DVD. Anyone at WB care to comment? This is a shameful omission.

Black Belt Jones delivers! This is a film that successfully blends fast paced kung-fu with a somewhat serious plot. Nonetheless, this movie is hilarious. This film isn't for those who take every film seriously. This is for individuals who are able to find humor in certain qualities that really aren't originally intended to be funny in the first place. This is a great film to watch with your buddies. The dialogue will have you in stitches. Even the weak voice over dubs for one of the mafia Guido henchmen will have you on the floor. Scattman Crouthers plays his role to the best of his ability. Also keep an eye open for some key cameos (Isaac from the Loveboat, and Marla Gibbs aka Florence from the Jeffersons). Once you find out what a Boureguard is...you'll cry in tears laughing. 10 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Movie is Great!, January 20, 2000

This review is from: Black Belt Jones [VHS] (VHS Tape)
BLACK BELT JONES was written and produced by Oscar Williams, one of my film school teachers, and he is one of the coolest people I have ever met. This movie embodies his attitude and style in every way. If you can't take an Oscar Williams class, for god's sake, watch "Black Belt Jones", and rejoice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious action that comes off funny., December 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Black Belt Jones [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie is one of the funniest films I have ever seen! Too bad that's not what their going for here. It's the 70's, big afros, big cars, and lots of jive talkin'. Oh yea, I forgot to mention the pimp lookalike that knows kung fu. The actors try to play this off as a serious action flick, but it just comes out funny. The action, however, is pretty good. This movie made me laugh until my sides hurt. This rates right up there with Dolemite and Blackula! I recommend that everyone buy this flick and watch it with a lot of people at least once a month!
