Book Description

Bushi is menaced by the bullies who call themselves Bullfrogs. One day, when he's running away from them, he hides in a dojo (karate school), where he sees a belt that once belonged to a karate master hanging on the wall. When he tries on the belt, he trips on it, falls, and hits his head. Upon awakening, he discovers he's been transported back in time and he's in a long-ago dojo where everyone seems to know him! There he hears about a dangerous bandit hiding in the hills and is grateful for the company of the two best students on his walk home. But when the bandit ambushes the two, Bushi learns firsthand that in karate, the winner is not necessarily the strongest fighter but may be the smartest fighter. It's a lesson he eventually takes back home and puts into practice when the Bullfrogs come after him one last time.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bushi (Japanese for "little warrior") hopes to stay out of the way of the "Bullfrogs" (the tough big kids at his school), but an after-school confrontation during which Bushi splashes soda on a Bullfrog's uniform all but seals Bushi's fate. He flees and ducks into the nearest open door, which happens to be a karate school. Once inside Bushi spies a black belt and a sign explaining that it belonged to the Master, "a small man with a big heart and the spirit of the tiger." While trying on the belt Bushi trips and falls, hitting his head on the floor and tumbling into a dream world where he encounters the Master and other samurai. The lessons Bushi learns there about loyalty, courage and strategy inspire him to begin karate instruction in earnest, just as soon as he awakes from his reverie. Faulkner's (Jack and the Beanstalk) action-packed tale addresses the issue of how to deal with bullies by applying the philosophyDnot necessarily the movesDof karate. Detailed paintings in a style somewhat reminiscent of Japanese animation depict both contemporary and medieval Japan. Part Kung Fu, part Karate Kid, this should have a built-in audience among young martial arts enthusiasts. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-Running away from bullies, a schoolboy in modern Japan happens to take refuge inside a karate school, where he finds a black belt hanging on the wall. Impulsively tying it around his waist, he trips, hits his head, and loses consciousness. Waking in old Japan, he participates in a samurai adventure involving a ferocious bandit, a respected karate master, and two brave young men. Waking again, this time to the modern world, Bushi joins the karate school. His teacher and the wisdom imparted in his dream equip him to deal with the bullies when they attack him again. Faulkner's realistic illustrations, detailed and carefully composed, make the physical action immediate. The artist's choice of colors appropriate to each part of the story helps unify a complex narrative. The menacing boys are depicted in dark browns, and the sky itself darkens with their approach. While the dream sequence seems a bit contrived, the precepts of martial arts-that size does not equal power, that brains are better than brawn, and that moving away from a charging opponent is more effective than meeting him head-on-are nicely embodied in the plot. Though this book has obvious appeal for boys, both sexes are shown studying modern karate. Paired with Emily Arnold McCully's Beautiful Warrior (Scholastic, 1998) or standing on its own, Black Belt is an entertaining read-aloud.

More About the Author

Award winning children's book author and illustrator Matt Faulkner grew up in a small town just outside of Boston, Ma. Upon graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1983, Matt took a job setting typography in NYC at an ad agency. Boy, was that the wrong job for Matt! Just as the studio manager was about to let him go, the owner of the agency saw the drawings Matt had done on his work table during lunch and hired him to draw storyboards for t.v. commercials! He got his own office and a pay raise! Woohoo!
Not long after, Matt created his first author/illustrated picture book- "The Amazing Voyage of Jackie Grace" with Scholastic. Since then he has created over 30 books for children. He delights in illuminating both historic stories and more fanciful tales and he works very hard not to get the two mixed up. Recently his author/illustrated book "A Taste of Colored Water" received the Comstock Honor award by the Minnesota State University, was chosen as a finalist by the California Commonwealth Club for it's 2009 Book award and was chosen as a winner in the pre-adolescent category by the National Storytelling Network. The NSNetwork also chose "Independent Dames: What You Never Knew About the Women and Girls of the American" (written by Laure Halse Anderson) as the winner of it's adolescent category in 2009. Matt and is engaged to author, Kris Remenar and currently lives with his son, Gabe, and two cat's on a little island in San Francisco Bay.

Once again Matt Faulkner demonstrates his outstanding abilities in the literary as well as artistic realm. "Black Belt" rises to the top among his other works such as: "Amazing Voyage of Jackie Grace," and"Jack and the Beanstalk." His illustration is so beautiful you almost need no words to read the story of Bushi and his nemesis Yag yu. What child has not lived through Bushi's experience and dreamed that he would be the victor. The story has everything that makes a book exciting for a child: Magical illustrations, a real life problem, a possible solution, and a surprise ending that leaves you wishing for more. What more could you ask for?
