Rams Ram-Jam into the Californian road dirt!,
By Dario Western (Brisbane, QLD AUSTRALIA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black Betty (Audio CD)
At last! Inveterate whimsical thrash-trash trio from Finley Lake have finally made it to No.1 in Australia with an earth-shattering cover of the old Ram Jam one-off classic "Black Betty". Featuring a well-worn bluegrass riff (almost reminiscent of their 'Old Man Sam'), the song tends to remain faithful to the original arrangement minus the guitar solo. With Kram's growly vocals sounding like they were sung through a sheet of tracing paper over a kid's megaphone, it has one of the most awesome middle-eights to come from a rock record in aeons. It pounds, bounces, and the beat threatens to stamp a hole the size of the grand canyon into the old school dance halls. Although they sound like they've forsaken their ventures into the dance territory, the CD still features some fine dance tracks for the club crowd and is the perfect introduction for the 'baiters to the UK & US crowd, where they've recently signed with the mighty Interscope label. So kids, give the Eminem, NIN, 50 cent and D-12 CD a rest for a while to say hi to their new labelmates! As one prominent Aussie music mogul says "Do yerself a favour, and add these simply marvellous guys to your collection!" |
