Book Description

The basic facts of David Horowitz’s political odyssey, one of the most significant of the last forty years, are well known. A “red diaper baby” who grew up in what he has called the ghetto of communism, he became a leading Marxist “theorist” in the early 1960s and one of the godfathers of the New Left. But following America’s defeat in Vietnam, Horowitz began to reevaluate the damage those commitments had done to the country and, over time, became the left’s worst enemy and a leading spokesman for conservatism.

The Black Book of the American Left, a projected ten volume work, is the result of this unique political odyssey. It collects all of Horowitz’s conservative writings over the last thrity years—at once a sharp incision into the heart of the left’s agenda; an explorations of routes conservatives might take in response to its permanent assault on America; and a unique trip log showing the evolving intellectual journey of an original and provocative thinker.

In Progressives, the second volume of this this monumental work, Horowitz shows how this term, once used by America’s communists to hide their true identity, is now used by liberals to describe themselves and their movement. Today’s “progressives” believe that they alone are forward looking while the rest of humanity lags behind; that their vision of what's good for everyone else justifies their coercive means; that because they are social redeemers building
Utopia, they can ignore the devastation caused by the construction process.

In addition to dissecting these destructive self delusions of the progressive mind, Horowitz demonstrates a deft touch in this volume in his profiles of Eldridge Cleaver, Angela Davis, Huey Newton, Bill Ayers, Tom Hayden, Oliver Stone, Eric Hobsbawm, Edward Said, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Betty Friedan and other self described progressives with whom he has come in contact during his political journey. He probes the truths behind their biographies and shows that while their rhetoric may be utopian, their intellectual energies have been focused solely on the work of destruction.

“In the Orwellian tradition of the ‘progressive’ project, there is no higher imperative
than bleaching away the nexus between progressive ideology and the epic destruction it inevitably wreaks. No one has contributed more than David Horowitz to the vital work of making that nexus indelible. In the first volume of The Black Book of the American Left, Horowitz offered captivating remembrances of his life and times as one of the Left’s key theorists. This second volume, Progressives, is a worthy successor, holding American Leftists to historical account while illustrating that they are direct descendants – and, when they think no one is listening, proud
descendants – of Marx and his progeny.”
—Andrew C. McCarthy

Horowitz’s writings reveal that today many of America’s political and academic elites, including the president of the United States, are blind to the moral treachery of those close to them, associates who in the past have committed terrible crimes or who dream of committing them in the future, yet they choose to honor and protect them…The Black Book project was conceived of as a dual challenge: to persuade leftists of the destructive consequences of their ideas; and to persuade conservatives of the malignancy of the forces mobilized against them.”
—Barbara Kay, National Post (Canada)

5.0 out of 5 stars Freedom Is Slavery February 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
David Horowitz's excellent insights into the 'progressive' mind comes from growing up with Communists as parents and believing everything they stood for - until he grew up. As much as many try to hide it, there is nothing new about the 'progressive' movement. It is the same old and tired commune of socialism that has been tried many times in history, and always fails miserably.

This edition of the Black Book on the American Left brings up the history of the 'progressives' to detail these failures. Young people today may actually think the term "progressive" is new - it is not. Regressive may be a better name than progressive when it comes to the current leftist ideology. The "1984" terminology the left uses does not hide this fact.

Horowitz's books never fail to stimulate discussion, and it is a very important discussion for the future direction of the US. Everyone will benefit from reading this book.

David's writings are prolific and prone to much repetition. Occasionally he relies on his memory, as we all do, for some facts that a little research reveals to be slightly off, but in the main his work hits the target. And for that, he must be continually demonized by the left in order to prevent people from actually reading him. He is a thoughtful critic of the left, and therefore dangerous to read.

Like Whitaker Chambers, he has chosen the personally difficult path of leading a life that he knows entails constant public humiliation. Yet he heroically perseveres.

I give this book four stars since I reserve five stars for books I know I will fully reread. However, I have highlighted passages throughout that I will return to because he has a way of elegantly articulating key insights with extreme economy.

Recommended for those who want to get a survey of his thought without having read his other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth shall set you free! March 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Educating ourselves about the true history of the American 20th century will lead us to once again recall the infamous quote,
(attributed to Churchill) “Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains.”

David Horowitz was there, and not just there but an ideologue and true believer! He was educated into the "whys" of the radicals who are now resurgent under Obama. The truth he proclaims is an embarrassment to the typical, ignorant liberal and a threat to those who also know the truth of what they're up to!

I also recommend to Tricky Nicky and others of his ilk, "Students for a Democratic Society: A Graphic History"
by Harvey Pekar (hardly a conservative!) but very revealing and honest by another one "who was there!"

5.0 out of 5 stars David Horowitz is a National Treasure May 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
David Horowitz was born in a Communist immigrant family in the United States but later turned against the left because of their massive crimes against humanity. Because he knows the left intimately he is uniquely able to document the original Communist ideologues and how they have managed to rebrand themselves as liberals and how as liberals they have managed to take over American colleges and universities. Anyone who has most of David Horowitz's previous material might be disappointed since this book is a compilation of previous articles but the material in this compilation is timeless and is just as valuable and relevant as it was when it was first published.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read the book--all ten volumes. September 9, 2014

David Horowitz's is a voice of sanity in an increasingly mad world. I can't imagine a better history of politics in the twentieth century than the multivolume compendium of his writings. Anyone who is angered by what Horowitz has to say is part of the problem.

A must read for fact and revelation of what Communism ideology really leads to. David Horowitz is a brave man speaking against an ideology which is deadly and a dead end for its followers.

A young female friend is murdered by the Black Panthers and so begins David Horowitz's journey from avid Lefty to conservative champion. Its a harrowing tale of shattered beliefs that eventually gives way to apostasy. While, David Horowitz gives a detailed account of his transformation, he also instructs the reader on the philosophy of the left and the horrors it has brought to millions of innocent people so it can achieve its impossible dream of social justice and equality whether we like it not. Most books I read alone, but not this one. On a very long journey, with husband and a car full of teenagers, I opened up David Horowitz's book and read until i could not read anymore. Surprisingly, not one protest was uttered. They listened and learned.
