Book Description

High school sucks.
All the boring classes, petty teachers, and inevitable teen drama.
Being a senior makes it all bearable, though.
At least, it's supposed to.
Unfortunately, Tommy and his friends are about to have a killer year...

All Tommy wanted was a little time to get over his break-up with Alyson. He never asked for a fight with Alyson's bizarro new boyfriend, Eric, but he wasn't about to shy away from it, either.
The only problem is that Eric isn't like other boys... The scars that never seem to heal. The black book - cold to the touch - that he keeps hidden in his basement. The unholy rage, seething just below the surface, set to shatter everything he touches, even the boundaries of hell.
And now, in the midst of what should have been the best time of their lives, Tommy and his friends must try to prevent Eric from achieving his ultimate goal: the summoning of a mysterious artifact capable of reducing the earth to ash, or raising it to untold glories...

Black is the genre-bending first book in the epic dark fantasy series The Nephilim Codex, blending the teen angst of a John Hughes movie marathon with Hong Kong action sensibilities and the pulse of a classic goth and alternative soundtrack. This new ebook edition contains an exclusive excerpt from Down - Canto II of The Nephilim Codex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black is Amazing ... May 16, 2012
By Glen
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Charles has really out done him self with this book, it captures your imagination from the beginning, and keeps you enthralled until the last page. The surprising twist at the end makes you want to choke the writer, but in turn you want to immediately read the next novel in the series. Charles has excelled in writing this novel, with a writing style comparatively with Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Anne Rice, or Clive Barker. I am very much looking forward to reading the follow up book of the series.

"Suddenly their came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. You heard me rapping, right?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! May 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I have to say this is literally one of the most fantastic pieces of work I've read in some time. In an age where we are starting to see the more serious side to the teenage mind, this blows them all out of the water. I am impatiently awaiting the sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Q: What is this? A: Awesome April 11, 2012
By btnewt
Format:Kindle Edition
Is it a Martial arts Mystery or a Horror romance? The answer is yes on all accounts. Black is a kick butt kung fu adventure that transcends genres and will delight fans whose tastes trend towards the Robert E Howard/Edger Rice Burroughs side of the spectrum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Story with Great Characters July 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Kindle Fire, Full Color 7" Multi-touch Display, Wi-Fi

I have just finished this book and, as other reviewers have noted, I can't get enough of thes wonderfully well-drawn characters and the compelling story.

I downloaded the book on one of its free days and will gladly pay full price for the sequel when it comes out in Winter 2012. In fact, that time seems a very long way off to have to wait and see what happens with these characters, especially after the teaser of a sample from the next book.
(Charles is a wicked man for doing that to us.)

So, fire up your Kindle and download this wonderful book. You will be glad you did.

4.0 out of 5 stars All I can say is wow July 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Okay, I know it's usually frowned upon for an author to review another author's work on amazon, but I couldn't resist. I picked this up on one of its "free days". Heard about it through ereader news today and was looking to stock up my newly purchased kindle. All I can say is wow. THOROUGHLY enjoyed not only the story, but the characters were some of the most well written I've seen in a long time. Won't lie, Bruce was my favorite. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anybody who is interested in Nephilim, angels, demons, or reading a damn good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Waiting for the sequel June 25, 2012
By Trish
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'll admit, I initially picked this up because it had been suggested to me by a friend and was free, but having read it, I'll pay full price for the sequel. I wouldn't really call it HORROR horror - more horror lite, but it is very well written and while the plot tends to spend more time on the band of friends and their interactions, than on the horror elements, I, for one, didn't mind.

The author does a kick ass job with the characters and the humor is realistic and funny as hell. Tommy is the protag of the story, but Bruce steals the show in nearly every scene he's in. I found this a quick, enjoyable read, a couple of the elements were a tad over the top and possibly a little cliched (boy steals girl from bland boyfriend, girls parents are racist, over the top religious nuts, that kind of thing) - but not terribly so. I enjoyed it as much as I enjoy both old kung-fu movies and 70's Hong Kong shoot-em-up's like The Killer and Hardboiled (which is a lot) - movies it seems the author enjoys as well.

And I'm not even the target demographic (young and male). I'm only surprised the author didn't go the traditional publishing route, this is certainly better than 50% of the stuff on the shelves at your local bookstore in any category. Well worth a read, I'll be checking out his other stuff. Don't let the fact that I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 put you off. It only means that I usually reserve 5 stars for books that are life changers, the ones that make you see things forever different in some small way, that you didn't before you read them - and there aren't too many on that list.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ!! May 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Books like these are typically out of my genre, but let me tell you something... once I started, I had a hard time putting my Kindle down. I'm used to being able to figure out a storyline about halfway through a novel, but Black kept me in suspense the entire time. Good versus evil, martial arts, religion, magick... This book encompasses all of them and even manages to take me back to my own teenage years. If you're wavering on whether or not to spend the money on this, all I can say is DO IT. You'll be hooked and waiting impatiently for book #2, as I am.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected, and I'm eager for the sequel March 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I have to agree with the author that the story suffers from first novel syndrome in places, but Colyott does a stellar job with characters and dialog, and the fun of that surpasses any stumbles in plot or believability. Well worth reading.

More About the Author

Charles Colyott lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere (Illinois) with his wife, 2 daughters, cats, and a herd of llamas and alpacas. He is surrounded by so much cuteness it's very difficult for him to develop any street cred as a dark and gritty writer. Nevertheless, he has appeared in Read by Dawn II, Dark Recesses Press, Withersin magazine, Horror Library Volumes III & IV, Terrible Beauty, Fearful Symmetry, and Zippered Flesh, among other places. He also teaches a beginner level Tai Chi Ch'uan class in which no one has died (yet) of the death touch.
You can get in touch with him on Facebook, or email him at charlescolyott@gmail.com.
Unlike his llamas, he does not spit.
